The Kerala government has ordered a vigilance probe into a 20-year-old case concerning the suicide of a Malaysian civil engineer associated with a road upgradation project. The deceased engineer had allegedly named the then PWD secretary, who currently serves as Chief Election Commissioner, over pending payments owed to a Malaysian company under the World Bank-funded Kerala State Transport Project. The inquiry was initiated following a complaint by a local political leader regarding allegations of criminal misconduct in awarding public works contracts. Political parties have exchanged allegations regarding previous inaction and political patronage surrounding the case.
