Earth orbit contains tens of thousands of tracked debris objects and millions of smaller fragments. At orbital velocities, even small debris can severely damage a spacecraft.
Kessler syndrome describes a potential feedback process: collisions create debris, which increases the probability of more collisions. It would not literally trap humanity on Earth, but sufficiently polluted orbital regions could become far more dangerous and expensive to use.
In this video:
- What orbital debris really is
- How hypervelocity collisions create fragments
- What Kessler syndrome actually means
- How satellites avoid collisions
- Why debris removal and responsible disposal matter
