00:00:00I am a bone demon.
00:00:01For centuries, I was trapped alone in a cold graveyard, unable to leave.
00:00:10No one could see me or hear me speak.
00:00:14Until that bright sunny morning.
00:00:24Food at last.
00:00:48So sweet.
00:00:50So much better than grass.
00:00:57You like peaches?
00:01:03You... you can see me?
00:01:06You don't fear me?
00:01:08No, I'll bring you peaches again.
00:01:11After that, the little girl would often bring me food.
00:01:16And I learned her name is Gina.
00:01:23She grew into a young woman, calm and graceful, prettier than any demon I'd seen.
00:01:31I'm marrying tomorrow.
00:01:32No marriage?
00:01:33Marriage means babies.
00:01:35I hate children.
00:01:36I hate children.
00:01:37They're noisy.
00:01:38Then when I bring food, they won't bother you.
00:01:41suit yourself.
00:01:42Suit yourself.
00:01:42Alright, I'm off then.
00:01:44Go on, go on.
00:01:45I can't leave.
00:01:46Must I see you off?
00:01:47I'm really going.
00:01:53But she broke her word.
00:01:55Those noisy crows.
00:01:57She had died years ago.
00:01:59Gina never came again.
00:02:04Seven years.
00:02:05She must have had children.
00:02:07Forgot.
00:02:08Forgotten me.
00:02:12Children are awful.
00:02:29Just what I feared.
00:02:57Stop crying.
00:02:58Everyone dies.
00:03:04Mother, my brother and I will bury you properly.
00:03:09I'm marrying tomorrow.
00:03:10No marriage?
00:03:11Then when I bring food, they won't bother you.
00:03:14Alright.
00:03:14I'm off then.
00:03:16I'm really going.
00:03:19Gina!
00:03:37Who did this?
00:03:43How did your mother die?
00:03:44Answer me.
00:03:46Your mother saw me.
00:03:47Can't you see me?
00:03:50Can't you see me?
00:04:12You two little brats.
00:04:14Dig till next year and you still won't bury her.
00:04:16You two little brats.
00:04:29You two little brats.
00:04:33You two little brats.
00:04:33You two little brats.

00:06:43Wait for me!
00:06:54Gina, this body of yours is so weak!
00:06:58A few steps and you're gasping!
00:07:02All these years you never came?
00:07:04Were you suffering?
00:07:06Who did this to you?
00:07:30Gina, don't be scared!
00:07:32I am you now!

00:08:44It was as if she was born ready to accept me!
00:08:46In just a few days,
00:08:47I learned to hold a baby,
00:08:49lull them to sleep,
00:08:50haul water,

00:08:51and do hard labor with ease!

00:10:10Don't blame me for keeping quiet and not helping!
00:10:13Who could have known your husband was so cruel
00:10:16he would beat you to death?
00:10:18Beaten to death?
00:10:21Why?
00:10:22I really didn't know!
00:10:24By the time I heard it,
00:10:25it was already too late!
00:10:34Don't pass out yet!
00:10:35Teach me how to cook!
00:10:36Got the chicken first!

00:10:42Potatoes work too!
00:10:44Don't make too much rice!
00:10:45This much water is enough!

00:11:39We're both mothers!
00:11:41If I died with my children on my mind!
00:11:43I couldn't rest in peace either!
00:11:50Gina!
00:11:51Why don't you smile?
00:11:52Was the food not to your liking?
00:11:54You won't return at midnight, right?
00:11:57Smile?
00:11:58What is a smile?
00:12:04Like this?
00:12:08Was it that scary?
00:12:10Lila and Brock were never afraid!
00:12:12They slept holding them!
00:12:19It really is pretty scary!
00:12:21The children never shunned me!
00:12:23Were they hiding their fear?
00:12:42I'll live as Gina!
00:12:44I'll finish this life for you!
00:12:46I'll raise your children!
00:12:48Until one day I meet you again!
00:12:56I won't go with you!
00:12:59You got mom killed!
00:13:14You're bad!
00:13:15I won't go with you!

00:13:51If I'm dead or not, shouldn't you know?
00:13:55You...
00:13:55Stay away from me!
00:13:57You're dead!
00:13:58I saw it myself!
00:14:00I know I did!
00:14:06Even as a ghost you won't let it go?
00:14:09It's no use!
00:14:10You brought this on yourself!
00:14:11I brought it on myself?
00:14:12That's right!
00:14:13All it took was a few nights with Lord Ma and all my debts were gone!
00:14:17But you refused!
00:14:18Nor let Lila go with me!
00:14:19You wanted me dead, didn't you?
00:14:22So you beat Gina to death?
00:14:25Gina!
00:14:26Yes!
00:14:26It wasn't all my fault!
00:14:28I didn't mean to kill you!
00:14:29You just broke too easy!
00:14:31I only hit you!
00:14:37You...
00:14:38What the hell are you?!
00:14:44Are you scared?
00:14:46No!
00:14:52Close your eyes!
00:14:53It'll be over soon!
00:15:13You're not Gina!
00:15:15I never wronged you!
00:15:16Please don't kill me!
00:15:22You're not Gina!
00:15:23No I'm not Gina!
00:15:25I'm here to send you to beg Gina's forgiveness!
00:15:38Open your eyes!
00:15:43I...
00:15:44What?!
00:15:44You scumbag!
00:15:45Bullying your wife again?!
00:15:46This time I won't look the other way!
00:15:48Get lost while you still can!
00:15:53You killed him!
00:15:56You killed him!
00:15:57Actually...
00:15:59I'm not your...
00:16:01I'm not your...
00:16:24I'm not your...
00:16:25Just a few scrapes...
00:16:26Wash them clean first!
00:16:27Nothing serious!
00:16:28I'll take you later to the village doctor for medicine!
00:16:30Put it on my tab for now!
00:16:33I'll keep calling you Gina!
00:16:35That face feels so familiar!
00:16:40Vous connaissez Gina ?
00:17:01Pour Gina, still so young, was home alone.
00:17:05Raising two children, farming and raising chickens.
00:17:08Embroidering to earn money.
00:17:10Every coin she saved Wood stole for gambling.
00:17:21You bitch !
00:17:23Come with me !
00:17:26Let go of me !
00:17:27I'm not going with you !
00:17:31Everything of value at home was pawned !
00:17:34What more do you want ?
00:17:35I've still got you !
00:17:37Master Ma already promised me !
00:17:39If you sleep with him a few times,
00:17:41he'll clear my debt and throw in some silver !
00:17:47You wood bastard !
00:17:49You're selling me ?
00:17:50Are you even human ?
00:17:54If you won't go, then Lila will !
00:17:58Oh yeah !
00:18:18Sleep now ! Sleep !
00:18:26This has happened before !
00:18:29I tried talking to Walter Wood before.
00:18:31But here in the village, things are rotten.
00:18:33Men beat their wives all the time.
00:18:35My lord, please!
00:18:38Even if we reported it, the men would pay someone off.
00:18:40And that would be the end of it.
00:18:42Even if a wife was killed, at most, a decent man would buy her a coffin.
00:18:46A heartless one would dump her in the graveyard.
00:18:54But I never imagined that time that wood bastard would kill Gina.
00:18:59When I went back the next day, no one was home.
00:19:02I asked around.
00:19:03Someone told me the two children carried Gina in a bamboo mat to Potter's Field.
00:19:08I had children at home, so I couldn't leave.
00:19:10Once they came back, I'd come look after them.
00:19:13Then, then you came.
00:19:15If I'd known this would happen that night, I would've...
00:19:19This isn't your fault.
00:19:26What's wrong?
00:19:27It hurts here.
00:19:32Things will be alright now.
00:19:33You're...
00:19:33Here.
00:19:34Life can get better.
00:19:35You're not scared now.
00:19:36Not anymore.
00:19:37Why would I fear Gina?
00:19:39If you're stuck, just come ask me.
00:19:41I'll make sure you learn.
00:19:43Alright.
00:19:43Thank you, Ms. Lewis.
00:19:46To care for the two children, even I, a bone demon, had to learn from the village women
00:19:51and shoulder our home.
00:19:53With Ms. Lewis guiding me, I learned to work the fields, to sew and embroider, and to raise
00:19:58hens for eggs.
00:20:04My proudest moment came after failure after failure, when I finally learned to cook.
00:20:18It smells so good.
00:20:19Mom's cooking smells even better.
00:20:21Brock wants some.
00:20:21Brock wants some.
00:20:22Well, you've truly mastered it.
00:20:24Even better than mine.
00:20:27Mom, what's wrong?
00:20:36Is it because chores and cooking wore me out?
00:20:40My body's been aching for no reason.
00:20:43Too long away from the graveyard.
00:20:45I should go back to recover.
00:20:51I'm fine.
00:20:54Lila, Brock, I need to talk to you both.
00:21:00I need to go away for two days.
00:21:02You two stay home and wait for me, okay?
00:21:05Of course we can.
00:21:07Brock and I will be good.
00:21:08And wait here for you.
00:21:11Gina, go do what you need.
00:21:13I'll take good care of both children.
00:21:17Thank you, Ms. Lewis.
00:21:41Gina, I made this cenotauve for you.
00:21:45Do you like it?
00:21:46That beast, Walter Wood, got what he deserved.
00:21:50No one will dare bully Lila or Brock again.
00:21:54But they're still so young.
00:21:56I promise.
00:21:58I'll raise them until they're grown.
00:22:09You don't have to worry.
00:22:11Rest in peace.
00:22:17In this life, I'll raise your children.
00:22:20In the next, save me a few baskets of peaches.
00:22:24As a proper thank you.
00:22:26Got it?
00:22:27In the next life, we must meet again.
00:22:33No!
00:22:56You scared me to death.
00:22:58Thank goodness you're safe.
00:23:00Thank goodness you're safe.
00:23:05Mom, you're back.
00:23:12Mommy, hug me.
00:23:14Mom's back.
00:23:15I won't leave again.
00:23:16I'll stay with you.
00:23:29Zane Shaw beat his wife again last night.
00:23:31She was wailing so pitifully.
00:23:33Pregnant too.
00:23:34Such cruelty.
00:23:35I heard she lost the baby.
00:23:40Why was she beaten?
00:23:44Her pregnancy is unstable.
00:23:46She's weak.
00:23:47Her husband wanted sex.
00:23:48She said no.
00:23:49So he hit her.
00:23:50Poor thing.
00:23:51But around here, what can anyone do?
00:23:54Yeah.
00:23:55All we can do is endure it.
00:23:58Was it the same for Gina?
00:24:00Enduring it all until she died so young and became a cold corpse?
00:24:19It's Zane Shaw's wife.
00:24:23It's so late.
00:24:25Where is she going?
00:24:45She wants to die.
00:24:47When she had no child, he beat her.
00:24:48She thought a baby would fix it.
00:24:51But with a baby, he still beat her.
00:24:53Now the baby is gone.
00:24:54He'll beat her again.
00:24:55How can anyone live like this?
00:24:57Better to just die.
00:25:06I can't let her do this.
00:25:18Who's there?
00:25:19Who is it?
00:25:25No one's here.
00:25:26That scared me to death.
00:25:28The branch was too weak.
00:25:29I'll try another tree.
00:25:37Again?
00:25:43I refuse to believe this.
00:25:48This branch shouldn't snap again.
00:25:54God, are you really this cruel?
00:25:57You won't even let me die?
00:25:59But if living means suffering, death would end it all.
00:26:22How can she see me too?
00:26:25Could it be because I've stayed in the village too long?
00:26:32That really hurts.
00:26:34Every bone in my body was nearly knocked apart.
00:26:41St. Shaw's wife!
00:26:43Come out!
00:26:44Under the bed?
00:26:44What's the point?
00:26:45Yes, come out!
00:26:47There's a ghost.
00:26:48A real ghost.
00:26:50Last night I went to the graveyard to die.
00:26:52I wanted to end it all.
00:26:54But I tried several times and couldn't die.
00:26:56Then I ran into a skeleton.
00:26:58Hard as stone.
00:27:00It scared me to death.
00:27:04What kind of nonsense is that?
00:27:06How could ghosts exist?
00:27:07Right!
00:27:08A skeleton, she says.
00:27:17Look!
00:27:17I'm telling the truth!
00:27:19Look!
00:27:19I hid those bones and they left a mark!
00:27:26There really is a red mark.
00:27:27It does look like a bone mark.
00:27:30It does look like a bone mark.
00:27:32My shoulder made that.
00:27:34Pretty, huh?
00:27:39Gina, could Zane Shaw's wife be telling the truth?
00:27:43By the graves, are there really ghosts?
00:27:45Still, it is odd.
00:27:47In storybooks, ghosts are all evil things.
00:27:50But Zane Shaw's wife is still alive.
00:27:53That ghost even saved her.
00:27:54How would I know?
00:27:55I've never seen one.
00:27:58Let's go back.
00:28:00Our child's home.
00:28:18Help!
00:28:21Help!
00:28:24Help!
00:28:25Help!
00:28:32Help!
00:28:33That's Zane Shaw's wife!
00:28:34He's beating her again.
00:28:37Help!
00:28:38Sous-titrage Société Radio-Canada
00:29:09You're dead tonight. I'll buy a wife tomorrow. I'll still get a virgin bride.
00:29:19Zaneshaw is utterly vile. To set the village right, I'll start with Zaneshaw.
00:29:28Who's there?
00:29:36What's going on?
00:29:46Who? Who are you? Stop playing tricks! Get your ass out here!
00:30:00Zaneshaw, don't ever hit-
00:30:01A GHOST!
00:30:04Just as I thought. Now they can all see my true form.
00:30:33Zaneshaw died not long after.
00:30:36Zaneshaw died not long after.
00:30:41Zaneshaw fell off a cliff. He'd been acting crazy for days, yelling about ghosts, wandering around in a daze. I
00:30:47heard he even ran into a tiger. It scared him so badly, he slipped and fell, smashed to pieces.
00:30:55Miss Lewis! So the one in the graveyard wasn't a ghost. She was an immortal. Without her help, I'd be
00:31:03dead many times over.
00:31:06Tell me, tell me, how should I thank her?
00:31:10The one who saved her was me, the bone demon, not some immortal.
00:31:15If you truly want to thank her, take some peaches and pastries to the graveyard.
00:31:21All right, I'll prepare peaches and pastries now. I'll go to the graveyard at dawn.
00:31:34Bone goddess, thank you for saving my life. I, June, will never forget.
00:31:54So sweet. Like the ones Gina brought back then.
00:31:59Gina, look, someone else has brought me peaches now.
00:32:05If only you were here, that would be wonderful.
00:32:12Spring turned to autumn. Lila and Brock grew up little by little.
00:32:18Mom, I'm heading out. The crops still need watering today.
00:32:22Mom, I'm off to school too.
00:32:25All right, go on.
00:32:29Apparently, Lila found a neighboring village bow for herself.
00:32:41How do I look?
00:32:45Yes, it's lovely. Just lovely.
00:32:52Gina, what's on your mind?
00:32:54I'm a little worried about Lila. I'm afraid she'll end up like me.
00:32:57What is there to worry about? Children have their own fate. Don't overthink it.
00:33:01Besides, the immortal lady watches over the village.
00:33:03Any man who dares act up and hit his wife will answer to the immortal lady.
00:33:07Right. Our village has the immortal lady watching over it.
00:33:12Immortal lady? The one punishing those stupid men at night.
00:33:15is obviously me, the bone demon.
00:33:19Since I keep worrying about Lila being bullied by men,
00:33:22and Brock being led astray,
00:33:24when I'm free at night, I wander around the village.
00:33:27If any man loafs around and beats his wife, I go scare him a little.
00:33:32You rotten hag asking for it!
00:33:36Hey, don't hit your wife.
00:33:38A goose!
00:33:41As for gamblers and drunks and lazy freeloaders,
00:33:44I spare none of them. Not until they're scared senseless.
00:33:49Drinking so happily, have you finished the chores?
00:33:53A ghost!
00:33:59Little by little, the women's cries faded and the men settled down.
00:34:04Not just in this village.
00:34:05I search the nearby villages. Across the hills.
00:34:09In that case, Lila shouldn't be beaten anymore, right?
00:34:12But if he dares mistreat Lila, I won't let him off.
00:34:16He won't!
00:34:19June, you've got a grey hair.
00:34:24Gina hasn't aged a bit. She hasn't.
00:34:26Gina really knows how to keep young. Teach us sometime.
00:34:30So aside from me, they had all aged a little.
00:34:39That thing scares us every day. Never in my life have I felt so damn useless.
00:34:43If this keeps up. Here, we'll never hold our heads up.
00:34:52This place reeks of demonic aura. Some evil creature must be at work.
00:35:01Taos Master, save us!
00:35:08Gina!
00:35:10A purple-robed Taos Priest is here.
00:35:12He says a demon haunts our village.
00:35:14He'll banish it! Everyone's at the clearing!
00:35:16What?
00:35:27My sacred command, obey!
00:35:32Quiet! The Taos Master is at work!
00:35:40Today, we'll make that demon vanish for good. No one will dare stop us!
00:35:53This Taos Priest, can he really banish demons?
00:35:56Demon hide no more!
00:35:57I see you now. You're among this crowd disguised as a mortal spreading chaos here.
00:36:08Seems this Taos Priest does have some skill. I can't stay here.
00:36:13Ms. Lewis, I have to get home.
00:36:20The Cosmic Demon Subduing Pouch! Its golden light reveals every demon's true form!
00:36:26Today, you have nowhere to hide!
00:36:28Oh no, don't tell me in front of everyone. I'll show my true form.
00:36:35Wicked Priest, stop! You're hunting blindly! How long will you hurt us?
00:36:39There are no demons in the village. We live in peace!
00:36:43Under Divine Lady's protection, you wicked priest came here to scam us! Nothing but lies!
00:36:48My duty is to uphold justice and vanquish demons. I seek no money!
00:36:54Justice, my ass! You just wanna ruin our good life here!
00:36:58Today, you won't run wild here!
00:37:04How dare you! Taos Master is a sage! You womenfolk know what?
00:37:07Go home! Let Taos Master work! Please continue, Taos Master!
00:37:24That pouch looks fun! It's ours now!
00:37:28That's my magic artifact! It's not a toy! Give it back!
00:37:32Smash Wicked Priest's altar! Throw it into the ravine!
00:37:46That was close!
00:37:49Taos Priest scum! Don't show your face again! Make trouble here again and you'll regret it!
00:37:58Strange. Demonic aura fills the sky. Why do the villagers protect the demon instead and keep claiming the Divine?
00:38:05The Divine Lady protects them!
00:38:10Daoist Master! You don't know the half of it! Everyone in the village is under that demon spell!
00:38:15That demon is a master of disguise! She panders to the women but preys on us in secret!
00:38:22Yes master! Her tricks are well hidden! No trace at all! We suffer in silence!
00:38:27If we weren't so tough, she'd have killed us long ago!
00:38:31So this fiend is their cunning!
00:38:34Then we cannot force our way in! We must lure her out!
00:38:39Only then can I see her true form and end this scourge!
00:38:43Taos Master! I have a plan!
00:38:46That demon usually hates seeing men beat their wives!
00:38:49If tonight I fake being drunk and hit her, that demon will rush out to stop me!
00:38:54Then you can take her down at once!
00:38:57Good! We'll do it your way!
00:39:03Stop kidding me! Help!
00:39:09Who dares beat his wife again?
00:39:17You useless thing! You can't even wash clothes right! What good are you?
00:39:33Stop! Don't hit her!
00:39:37Taos Master! The demons appeared!
00:39:41The vile creature finally shows itself!
00:39:46Immortal lady, don't worry about me! Run now!
00:39:50Run! She won't get away now!
00:40:07Today I act in heaven's name!
00:40:10To subdue you bone demon, scourge of mankind and restore peace to this world!
00:40:15I have never harmed anyone!
00:40:16I only wanted to protect those helpless women!
00:40:18What's wrong with that?
00:40:20Protect helpless women?
00:40:22Taos Master! Don't be fooled by this demon!
00:40:24This monster made our lives hell!
00:40:26Today, Taos Master ends you!
00:40:34Taos Master! Stop! Don't hurt her!
00:40:37She is a wicked fiend!
00:40:40I am acting in heaven's name!
00:40:44She is no demon!
00:40:47She is the one who protects us!
00:40:49Our Immortal Lady!
00:41:02I can't believe they truly worshiped me as an immortal!
00:41:07She is clearly a demon!
00:41:08How did she become your Immortal Lady?
00:41:12You mere mortals! Don't let her deceive you!
00:41:16You're the one being fooled!
00:41:17Fort Cole usually boos his pants, beats his wife!
00:41:20He does every evil thing!
00:41:21If Immortal Lady hadn't helped, his wife would be dead!
00:41:24Immortal Lady disciplined him, so he held a grudge!
00:41:27That's why he lied to you and called her a scourge to the village!
00:41:34Taos Master, Ms. Lewis is right!
00:41:37If not for Immortal Lady, I would have been beaten to death by Fort Cole!
00:41:42You! Say another word and I'll beat you to death!
00:41:47Taos Master, Ms. Lewis told the truth!
00:41:49This Immortal Lady saved my life too!
00:41:52She protects us, all the women and children, from being bullied!
00:41:55She is no demon!
00:41:57She is a goddess who saves us from suffering!
00:42:04My dad used to beat me and mom!
00:42:07Immortal Lady scared him straight!
00:42:09Since Immortal Lady came in the village, no one gets bullied anymore!
00:42:14She has never hurt anyone! Only save them!
00:42:20Withdraw!
00:42:26I listened to one side only and wronged an innocent!
00:42:29I nearly aided evil! I am ashamed!
00:42:33I nearly aided evil! I am ashamed!
00:42:46Seize Fort Cole! Don't let Dave Lee escape either!
00:42:49They dared to harm our village's Immortal Lady!
00:42:51I, Ms. Lewis, will make them pay first!
00:43:05Immortal Lady! Are you alright? Are you hurt?
00:43:08We're sorry we came late! We let you suffer!
00:43:14Aren't you afraid of me?
00:43:28Afraid? Why should we fear our guardian deity?
00:43:33You saved us! Every woman and child in the village!
00:43:35You are the Immortal Lady! Our Bone Goddess!
00:43:43Yes! Bone Goddess! We're not afraid of you! We're grateful!
00:43:50Bring them in!
00:44:01We know you love peaches! We picked these for you! From now on, we'll bring them daily!
00:44:08Enough! Enough! I can't eat all this!
00:44:32Excuse me!
00:44:35Is this Ms. Lila's home?
00:44:56This is Lila's house!
00:44:58Auntie, Brother Brock, Milo Lin, neighboring village!
00:45:02I came today to ask for her hand!
00:45:05Lila and I love each other! She is the only one for me!
00:45:16I swear for the rest of my life I will protect Lila, cherish Lila, and never let her suffer!
00:45:22If I break this oath, may lightning strike me!
00:45:28Lila is the child I protected with my life!
00:45:30I won't hand her over to a man of empty words!
00:45:34If you want to marry her, pass my three tests!
00:45:37Ask anything, Auntie! Not just three! I take on thirty! Just give me a chance, Auntie!
00:45:43Good! Your first test is this! A half acre plot outside is full of stones and weeds! No one will
00:45:48plant it!
00:45:48You have three days to clear it yourself! Sow seeds! No help! No shirking!
00:45:52I want to see if you can endure hardship and stay grounded!
00:45:57Understood! I'll go now! Within three days, I'll get it done!
00:46:13Mother! Do you think Milo-Lynn can pass the test? I bet my sister really wants him to pass!
00:46:19Brock, stop talking nonsense! Before I knew it, Lila has already come of age to marry!
00:46:24I'm getting married tomorrow! Do you know what that means?
00:46:27Once you're married, you have children! I hate children! They're too noisy!
00:46:32Then when I bring you food, I won't bring them to bother you!
00:46:34The last time I saw you, you were just this size! Before I even realized it!
00:46:39You've been gone from us for so long!
00:47:01Milo-Lynn! You can do it!
00:47:11Lila, what are you doing here?
00:47:15Mom! I... I was just passing by!
00:47:19You told me earlier you were going to Xiaohua's! Her place isn't this way! Did you come this way just
00:47:24to pass by?
00:47:25Mom!
00:47:29Milo-Lynn really is hard working!
00:47:31Lila, tell me, what do you like about Milo-Lynn?
00:47:37Last time I was washing clothes by the river, I nearly slipped!
00:47:40He caught me!
00:47:47Thank you!
00:47:50My clothes!
00:47:51Don't worry miss, I'll get them back for you!
00:47:54He helped too with the clothes that fell in and picked them all up!
00:47:58I lost my embroidered kerchief, he walked for miles to find it for me!
00:48:02He's kind to everyone, he never snaps at anyone!
00:48:05When I'm with him, I'm not afraid, I don't feel wronged either!
00:48:14Sir, let me walk you home!
00:48:16But you...
00:48:17Aren't you taking Gina's test by clearing new land?
00:48:20Walking me home will hold you up!
00:48:25It's alright, when I get back I'll work a little longer!
00:48:29I appreciate it!
00:48:31I'll be right back!
00:48:40I'll be right back!
00:48:40I'll be right back!
00:48:40Ma, look!
00:48:41That's just how kind he is!
00:48:43Seems Lila really likes him!
00:48:49Ma...
00:48:51Three days passed, what was once piled with stones and overrun with weeds, was completely transformed!
00:48:57The soil was soft and loose, the seeds were neatly sown.
00:49:00A hard working, kind-hearted, you've passed the first test.
00:49:19They're okay!
00:49:23Thank you for that, Auntie!
00:49:25Don't celebrate yet.
00:49:27There are still two tests to go.
00:49:30Tell me what to do, Auntie.
00:49:32For the second test,
00:49:33to see if Milo Lin was fair and responsible,
00:49:35I sent him to handle
00:49:36the toughest canal dispute in the village.
00:49:38Milo Lin listened to every household
00:49:40without bias.
00:49:41He measured the lines himself.
00:49:42In just two days,
00:49:43he resolved years of bad blood.
00:49:45Every villager was convinced.
00:49:48The third trial,
00:49:50I secretly sent a village woman.
00:49:53With Cash and Beauty
00:49:54and put Milo Lin to the test,
00:49:56she pressed him every way
00:49:57with one lure after another.
00:49:59But he never crossed the line.
00:50:03He passed all three trials.
00:50:06I can entrust Lila to you.
00:50:11Thank you, Auntie.
00:50:13I will never let Lila down.
00:50:16Mother, thank you.
00:50:18Thank you for blessing us.
00:50:22Silly child.
00:50:24I only want you to live safe and happy.
00:50:28And never be wronged.
00:50:30Sis, congratulations.
00:50:35Milo Lin, treat my sister well.
00:50:38If you hurt her, I'll make you pay.
00:50:44I'd never hurt her.
00:50:45Wonderful!
00:50:46Another fine match in our village.
00:50:49Immortal lady, bless us.
00:50:50May the girls in our village
00:50:52all marry well.
00:50:59Before long,
00:51:00Lila married Milo Lin.
00:51:03I watched over Lila for over ten years,
00:51:05from a little child
00:51:06to a graceful young woman.
00:51:09and now
00:51:10I had to give her
00:51:11to someone else.
00:51:17Mom!
00:51:20I don't want to leave you.
00:51:21You're only getting married.
00:51:23You'll come back.
00:51:24At the Lin home,
00:51:25live your life well.
00:51:26Be kind to others,
00:51:27but don't take abuse.
00:51:29If Milo Lin ever bullies you
00:51:30or anyone in the Lin family
00:51:32mistreats you,
00:51:32just come home.
00:51:33I'll always be the one
00:51:34you can count on.
00:51:35Sis,
00:51:36it's only the next village.
00:51:38We will visit you often.
00:51:40Mom!
00:51:41Little brother!
00:51:43After Lila joined the Lin's,
00:51:45her life was peaceful and smooth.
00:51:47Before long,
00:51:47she was expecting.
00:51:48Around her delivery,
00:51:49I went to the Lin family
00:51:50more and more often.
00:51:51Village women taught me
00:51:52how to care for a new mother.
00:51:54They gave me eggs and herbs.
00:51:55To take to Lila.
00:51:56Gina,
00:51:57my husband foraged these.
00:51:58Best for soup.
00:51:59Take them to Lila.
00:52:00They'll nourish her.
00:52:01Here!
00:52:02Our old hen just laid these.
00:52:04Very nourishing.
00:52:04Take them to Lila.
00:52:08These are tiger head shoes
00:52:10I made for the baby.
00:52:11This is our homemade rice wine.
00:52:13Take them all to Lila.
00:52:24You all,
00:52:25this is too much.
00:52:26Lila can't finish all this.
00:52:28We all watched Lila grow up.
00:52:30Now she's having a baby.
00:52:32As her aunties,
00:52:33how could we not care?
00:52:34Confinement has rules.
00:52:36What to do?
00:52:37What not to do?
00:52:37We wrote it all down for you.
00:52:39After Lila has the baby,
00:52:40make the Lin's follow it.
00:52:42Don't let Lila be mistreated.
00:52:48All right.
00:52:49Dong Lai.
00:52:50Lila had a daughter.
00:52:52Fair and chubby.
00:52:53She's adorable.
00:52:58So soft.
00:53:00So tiny.
00:53:02You can tell at once she's blessed.
00:53:06Madam, why not name the baby yourself?
00:53:11Me?
00:53:15That's right.
00:53:16You raised Lila all on your own.
00:53:19The baby's name should be yours to choose.
00:53:21That's right.
00:53:22Mother, please name the baby.
00:53:26Peachy.
00:53:27Well, let's call her Peachy.
00:53:28Peachy can be her nickname.
00:53:31Peachy.
00:53:32It's lovely.
00:53:33Peachy it is.
00:53:35Peachy.
00:53:36Thank grandma for naming you.
00:53:41Looks like Peachy likes the name too.
00:53:43I never dreamed I'd one day get to name a child.
00:53:50Three years later,
00:53:52Brock got married too.
00:54:09Another two years passed.
00:54:11Brock had a child of his own.
00:54:20But that year brought unrest.
00:54:22War raged outside.
00:54:24Men were seized all over.
00:54:31Bad news.
00:54:32The officials are seizing men.
00:54:34Young men from many homes were taken away.
00:54:44Why is it here so suddenly?
00:54:45Didn't they say recently it was still far from here?
00:54:56You and you.
00:54:58By law, you're conscripted.
00:55:00Come with us.
00:55:02No, my love.
00:55:04Please don't go.
00:55:05How dare you?
00:55:07His majesty has decreed.
00:55:08The border is under siege.
00:55:10Anyone who disobeys will be charged with treason.
00:55:12Please, sirs.
00:55:13Have mercy.
00:55:13Make an exception.
00:55:14My grandson's newborn.
00:55:16He needs his father.
00:55:17His wife is weak.
00:55:18Everyone at home depends on him.
00:55:20Please take this.
00:55:21Have a drink on us, sirs.
00:55:23Please show mercy.
00:55:25Spare him this once.
00:55:26I'll take the silver.
00:55:28On the road, I'll see he gets fewer beatings.
00:55:31But he has to go.
00:55:32It's an imperial edict.
00:55:34Who dare bend it?
00:55:35You defy the court.
00:55:37Want to keep your head?
00:55:38Say one more word, and I'll throw you in jail with him.
00:55:50I'll go with you.
00:55:51Don't touch my family.
00:55:55Mother, all my life I've only caused you trouble.
00:55:58I should have cared for you.
00:56:00But fate had other plans.
00:56:02Now that I'm leaving, the family falls to you again.
00:56:05Please, look after my wife and child.
00:56:15I promise, I'll keep them safe and guard our home.
00:56:19Remember this.
00:56:20Once you're there, don't be a hero.
00:56:23Don't push it.
00:56:24Stay alive.
00:56:25I'll be home waiting for you.
00:56:27Enough.
00:56:28That's enough.
00:56:29Come with us now.
00:56:32Ma!
00:56:33My love!
00:56:35Take care of yourselves!
00:56:37I'll come back!
00:56:43Rock was taken away.
00:56:45So was Ms. Lewis' son, Sean.
00:56:48And so many children I'd watched grow up.
00:56:52With the men gone, the village fell much quieter.
00:56:56That same year, a great drought struck.
00:56:58Not a drop fell.
00:56:59People in the village looked worried.
00:57:02Barely surviving.
00:57:12Lila's family lived off their rice paddies.
00:57:16Then the drought came.
00:57:17They harvested nothing.
00:57:19Food and clothing became a struggle.
00:57:26Mom, Dad, drink.
00:57:29You drink, Peachy.
00:57:30We're not hungry.
00:57:33Right.
00:57:34Our peachy is still growing.
00:57:36Drink it.
00:57:47This can't go on.
00:57:48If it stays dry, not just Lila's family, the whole village will starve and die of thirst.
00:57:53I have to find a way.
00:57:56In my thousand-year bone demon form, I beg the mountain god, the earth god, and the city god.
00:58:07The drought in this land is a calamity decreed by heaven.
00:58:16Lord city god, I know this calamity is fated, but this calamity will cost innocent lives.
00:58:22I can't just stand by and watch the drought kill them.
00:58:24Please, lord city god, show us a way to live.
00:58:28Birth, age, sickness, and death, and every disaster are all fate.
00:58:31You may protect them for now, but can you protect them forever?
00:58:34If I can protect them now, then I will.
00:58:36If it lets them survive this drought, even if it costs me one thousand years, even if my soul is
00:58:41scattered, I would accept it.
00:58:43You little demon, such stubborn obsession.
00:58:46To tell you the truth, for the next three months, no rain will fall here.
00:58:49This calamity has no true solution.
00:58:51But in Jiangnan, one thousand miles away, rain has poured for days.
00:58:56The rivers are overflowing.
00:58:58Thank you for your guidance, lord city god.
00:59:00If I can bring Jiangnan's water here, the village still has hope.
00:59:04You are only a lesser demon.
00:59:06Your power is weak.
00:59:07To go that far and bring water back will not be easy.
00:59:11If it can save everyone, I am willing to try.
00:59:43I ran again and again.
00:59:44Two rivers a thousand miles away and brought back water.
00:59:47Then atop the mountain, I called rain with demon power.
00:59:53Why won't it rain?
00:59:55Did I fail?
01:00:04Here it comes.
01:00:06Clouds are coming.
01:00:31It's raining.
01:00:34Dad, Mom, it's raining.
01:00:39Our crops are safe.
01:00:41He won't starve anymore.
01:00:44This is wonderful.
01:00:47It worked.
01:00:50With my demonic power drained, I collapsed.
01:00:53I almost couldn't even turn back into Gina's form.
01:01:21Mom, Lila's scared.
01:01:23Open your eyes.
01:01:25Please look at Lila.
01:01:26Mom.
01:01:36Mother, you're awake.
01:01:39Lila, as she is now, is much older than Gina.
01:01:43Seeing her is like seeing Gina in middle age.
01:01:46Lila, my dear Lila, I can't bear to leave you.
01:01:50Mother, you'll be all right.
01:01:52You will be.
01:01:53Lila will stay here with you and care for you until you're well.
01:01:57Mother, mother, you can't leave Lila again.
01:02:02All right.
01:02:03I'll try to get well and stay with you always.
01:02:06That year, Lila and the village folks took turns caring for me.
01:02:11I didn't die.
01:02:12I just lay there for a long time.
01:02:13Another seven or eight years passed.
01:02:16Brock's son could fish in the river.
01:02:19Grandma, look.
01:02:21I caught a big fish.
01:02:23I want your grilled fish.
01:02:25All right.
01:02:27Brock's boy was just like his father as a clever, lively kid.
01:02:31I wonder how his father is doing now and when he'll come home.
01:02:39Grandma Gina, my grandma says it's urgent.
01:02:42Please go see her.
01:02:50Miss Lewis, I heard you wanted to see me.
01:02:54Gina, what am I going to do?
01:02:56Sean may never come back.
01:02:59He's been gone for years.
01:03:01Not a word from him.
01:03:02I'm running out of time.
01:03:04I may not even see him one last time.
01:03:07What am I supposed to do?
01:03:09Miss Lewis, get some rest.
01:03:12Close your eyes and sleep.
01:03:14When you wake up, Sean will be back.
01:03:19Not just Sean.
01:03:21Brock and the other children, too.
01:03:23They'll all come home.
01:03:31I split myself into countless pieces and entered countless crows.
01:03:35They flew in every direction, across the vast sky, searching every corner of the battlefield.
01:03:41The village men fought hard.
01:03:43Near death.
01:03:45All I could do was give my all to keep them alive.
01:03:55After the war, I continue to possess a crow and guide them home.
01:04:08We've wandered these woods for half a month.
01:04:10If we can't get out when rations run out, we're dead for sure.
01:04:14I'm afraid I'll never see Mother again.
01:04:25Mother, it's you, isn't it?
01:04:28You've come to take me home.
01:04:40Come on.
01:04:43They're back!
01:04:44Our fighting men are all back!
01:04:47Miss Lewis may get better now.
01:04:52Though Sean came back, Miss Lewis' illness still didn't improve.
01:04:56Thank you.
01:04:58Thank you for bringing Sean back.
01:05:01I didn't do much.
01:05:02Everything you've done, I know it all.
01:05:06All these years, you've had it hard.
01:05:08Gina suffered all her life.
01:05:09You lived her life for her.
01:05:11Protected her child and guarded our whole village.
01:05:14Thank you, truly.
01:05:15You all knew, everyone knew.
01:05:18You're the bone goddess who guards us.
01:05:21In this life, meeting you has been our blessing.
01:05:24But now, the village children will need your care.
01:05:28Don't worry.
01:05:29I will, Miss Lewis.
01:05:30It was the second time.
01:05:33I felt the pain of farewell by death.
01:05:36Later, June passed away, too.
01:05:39Those of Gina's generation left us one by one.
01:05:42Even Lila went from Miss Lila to Aunt Lila and then Grandma Lila.
01:05:47Mother, Lila doesn't want to leave you.
01:05:49Lila is going now.
01:05:51You should rest, too.
01:05:52If in the next life, Lila can still be your daughter.
01:05:55That would be wonderful.
01:06:05Sleep now.
01:06:06Mama's right here.
01:06:15Later, still.
01:06:16Brock passed, too.
01:06:18One by one, old friends.
01:06:20We're gone.
01:06:27Gina's body seemed to be at its limit.
01:06:31Time to return to Graveyard.
01:06:52Gina, rest in peace.
01:06:55I'll wait for our reunion.
01:07:16Miss, Miss, wake up.
01:07:19Why are you sleeping here?
01:07:25Gina.
01:07:27Who's Gina?
01:07:28Miss, I'm not Gina.
01:07:31My name is Tina.
01:07:33Miss, here, have some.
01:07:38It's really sweet.
01:07:40You can see me.
01:07:43Ever since everyone I knew left, no one could see me.
01:07:48Of course I can.
01:07:50Tina, time to go home.
01:07:53Coming.
01:07:54Miss, I have to go.
01:07:55I'll bring you peaches next time.
01:07:58Gina.
01:08:00We meet again.
01:08:02May this life of yours be free from sorrow.
01:08:10Maybe it was because I had met Gina again.
01:08:14Once again, I managed to leave the Graveyard.
01:08:17The world had changed beyond recognition.
01:08:21Everyone, keep up.
01:08:23Up ahead is today's main attraction, Bone Goddess Temple.
01:08:28Bone Goddess Temple.
01:08:31Did you know, this temple has been untouchable for centuries.
01:08:35Even after the area became a scenic site, Bone Goddess Temple had to stay as it was.
01:08:40Why is that, guide?
01:08:41The temple looks small.
01:08:42Is there a story?
01:08:44Of course there is.
01:08:45Bone Goddess is a local goddess found only here.
01:08:49Legend says she has always protected women and children here.
01:08:53Look, everyone, this is our Bone Goddess Idol.
01:08:57Legend says peaches were her favorite.
01:08:59Wow.
01:09:00Bone Goddess really is a skeleton.
01:09:02She looks nothing like traditional gods.
01:09:04Guide?
01:09:05So what is Bone Goddess?
01:09:08She is our Mother Goddess.
01:09:22Grand finale.
01:09:24Grand finale.
