Astronomers have discovered the largest and most distant reservoir of water ever detected in the universe. Located over twelve billion light years away, this massive vapor cloud surrounds a giant feeding black hole called a quasar. The quasar is known to scientists as APM 08279+5255.

This cosmic ocean contains one hundred and forty trillion times more water than all of Earths oceans combined. The water exists as a massive vapor cloud stretching across hundreds of light years of space. The intense energy from the central black hole heats the surrounding gas, creating vast amounts of water vapor.

Because this light took twelve billion years to reach us, we are seeing the universe in its infancy. This proves that water existed in huge quantities much earlier in cosmic history than scientists previously thought possible. It shows that the ingredients for life were present very early on.

Do you think water and life are common across the universe?
