📰 THE FULL STORY

UK diesel prices have risen above £2 a litre for the first time, reaching an average of 200.01p a litre according to the RAC, an all time high. Petrol also rose to an average of 174.71p a litre, the highest in more than four years but below its 2022 peak of 191.5p. Before the Middle East conflict, diesel averaged 142.38p per litre. Filling an average family car with diesel now costs £110, almost £32 more than at the start of the US-Iran war, while a typical petrol car fill-up has risen to £96.09, up £23.03 since February.

The BBC reports the Iran war has disrupted oil and refined product supply from the region for seven months, while Ukrainian attacks on Russian refiners and Chinese export restrictions have further constrained diesel supply. RAC head of policy Simon Williams called £2 a litre a price threshold no one wanted to cross and warned it will be challenging for commuters, haulage firms and businesses with large fleets. He said prices will not fall until there is a sustained lower oil price over several weeks, not days.

G7 countries, including Britain, agreed to coordinate release of 100 million barrels of crude oil and refined fuel products from emergency reserves over four months, including a front-loaded diesel release within the first 20 days. The move follows pressure from the Trump administration to ease fuel prices. Trump said on Truth Social that Europe agreed to release a massive amount of its heavily stocked Diesel Oil and that the process will begin immediately.

Kevin Hassett said Europe's strategic reserves consist of refined product, unlike the U.S. crude reserve, so they can be supplied directly to markets without refining, and that a European release provide relief for diesel prices and would have a massive positive effect. The New York Post reported that experts said the reserve release help reduce European diesel prices but would have minimal impact on US prices since the US produces most of the diesel it consumes.

⬛ HOW THE CENTER COVERS IT
Center coverage treats the RAC data as the default benchmark, documenting the £2 threshold, the 200.01p diesel average, petrol at 174.71p, and the concrete cost to drivers. It foregrounds supply-side causes the partisan sides skip: a seven-month Iran war disruption, Ukrainian strikes on Russian refiners, Chinese export restrictions, and UK reliance on the US for around 17% of diesel. It notes Simon Williams' warning that relief requires sustained lower oil prices over weeks, and that Trump is considering banning US diesel exports, which push UK
