Two opposing demonstrations took place at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park on Gandhi Jayanti over demands linked to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The Citizens Justice Party, led by founder Abhijeet Dipke, organised a protest seeking Kumar’s resignation, a freeze on the 2025 electoral rolls and transparency in the appointment of future election chiefs. The gathering drew youths, first-time voters, celebrities and public figures, with protesters carrying the national flag and placards. A counter-protest was also held at the venue, with participants accusing the organisers of selective outrage. Heavy security was deployed as further protests were planned.

00:00Hello and welcome, I'm Sonal Mehrotra Kapoor, you're watching Five Live here on India Today.
00:05Now, it is a day of rapid developments. I would love to start by wishing you happy Gandhi Jayanti,
00:11but on a day when peace should be propagated, we are seeing a lot of activity on the ground.
00:18I mean protests that have broken out in Delhi, in Mumbai, at Jantar Mantar, at Shivaji Park,
00:27where it could be outfits like the Cockroachanta party, it could be opposition parties as well,
00:33who have come together. They are united in their demand for the removal of the Chief Election
00:40Commissioner. All of this as details have emerged on how he bulldozed his way, overruled several other
00:47cautions that were imposed before him. Basically, the allegation is that he is working at the behest
00:54of the government. There is pressure groups, there are political parties who have now taken
01:00into account that he must go. But will it go that far? What will be the future and perhaps for
01:07the
01:07CEC and also how will these protests roll out? We'll take you through all of that. First up,
01:12the headlines at this hour.
01:17Prime Minister Modi speaks to Captain Smith on video call, Lord Jesus Vala. Smith breaks down
01:23while that conversation says he was chanting Hanuman Chalisa inside the cockpit.
01:27Prime Minister Modi wished him a speedy recovery.
01:31Prime Minister Modi says he is a big Iran angle. Meanwhile, big Iran angle emerges in the fly
01:48Dubai crash plot. Our Trump claims that Umani co-pilot may be linked to Iran. Mitanyahu says the Umani
01:56pilot was suicidal. Cleaned pilot was Islamist and radicalized.
02:09Protests against CEC Gyanesh Kumar intensify across the country. Cops detain over a thousand
02:15protesters from left party, Congress, Ahmadi party as they agitate in the national capital. Meanwhile,
02:21CJP protests kicks off in Mumbai's Shivaji Park. Russian President Putin has hailed Prime Minister
02:33Modi's peace push, says Prime Minister has a desire to end the conflict. He thanks Modi for his desire
02:39to end the war. Shah also hails the Prime Minister.
02:46And more gold for India at the Asian Games. Indian women's recurve archery team wins the Asian Games
02:54gold medal. Lavlina clinches the gold in 75 kg boxing as well. India backed its 12th gold medal at the
03:04Asian
03:05Games. A massive offensive against the chief election commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar is playing
03:20out on the streets of Delhi and Mumbai, also adding to the growing confrontation over the election
03:27commission. In Delhi, the India bloc has stepped up its attack over this EC, while in Mumbai, the
03:33citizens' justice party is holding a protest at Shivaji Park, demanding Gyanesh Kumar's resignation.
03:39The CJP founder, Abhijit Divke, says that the protest will continue until the CEC resigns.
03:45Will that really happen? We've got to wait and watch for that one. The group says that it is prepared
03:50to face arrest and will go ahead with its protest, even without official permission. There are three
03:57key demands that the CJP has really put forward. Number one, they're asking for CEC Ganesh Kumar to resign.
04:06Number two, freeze the 2025 electoral list. And number three on their demand is transparency in the
04:15appointment of the next CEC. The protests that have been taking place in Delhi and in other places as
04:23well also escalated political row over the election commission and its handling of the electoral rolls.
04:41And number three on their demand is transparency in Marathi.
04:45And he's trying to address the crowd over there, speaking in Marathi. He is at Shivaji Park and is
04:51trying to address the crowd asking him to calm down before he can really make his voice heard.
04:57and rich, cómot elle will make of this issue of suicide.
05:03I said, thief, thief।, thief, thief, thief, thief, thief, thief, thief, thief, thief, thief, thief,or thief, thief.
05:25It is the one who we are, I am the one who can't resist.
05:45I am the one who is a person who is a person who is a person who is a person
05:50who is a person.
05:59Please, please, please.
06:17So, as Abhijit Dipke there preps up the crowd urging them to sit down while he gets
06:23ready to address the crowd, it will be interesting to see what he actually says.
06:26Let us cut across to our very own Abhijit, Abhijit Karan, our reporter there who has been
06:30covering the protest.
06:32Let's cut across to him to get a word from him.
06:35Abhijit, tell us what is going on there, how many crowds have come in Shivaji Park?
06:45See, this is a very iconic place.
06:47You can see that behind the stage is located.
06:51And this is Minatai Thakere, the crowd will show you the whole road.
06:57And this call was CJP.
07:01It is a very important place to see that the police have been in the streets.
07:08So, there is a lot of people here.
07:10There are a lot of people here.
07:12There are many people here.
07:13There are many people here.

09:37All right, we'll try and connect back to Abhijit,
09:39but in the meanwhile, let's also try and cut across
09:42to those live visuals on your screens at the moment.
09:45Let me just give you a sense of what's happening.
09:47Abhijit Dipke is on top of that vehicle over there.
09:51And he's trying to address the crowd.
09:54There, he's trying, asking them, urging them at the moment to sit down
09:58because he's going to make a speech.
09:59Remember, this is part two, or season two as he had himself called,
10:04of the CJP protest.
10:06This is looking, by the way, very different from what we saw earlier in the day
10:11during the Delhi protest.
10:13During the Delhi protest, these numbers were not allowed to actually come together.
10:17We've seen detention of over a thousand people,
10:211100 people, to be precise, more than that, in fact,
10:24have been picked up by Delhi police at different corners,
10:27even before they could get together,
10:29even before they could gather at Jantar Mantar,
10:31they were all picked up and taken in detention.
10:34This includes people from different political parties,
10:36from left, from AISA, from Amadi party as well.
10:41But in Mumbai, the story looks pretty different.
10:46Let me just cut across and go back to Abhijit to try and understand what really is happening.
10:52Abhijit, if you can hear me now, I was trying to understand from you the difference
10:57in the kind of people who have turned up this time,
11:00who have turned up this time before the Dharmey Indra Pradhan of the Steefee,
11:03who have turned up this time in CJP protest,
11:05who have turned up this time in the protest and who have turned up this time?
11:08In that time, how many people have turned up this time,
11:11and how many people have turned up this time,
11:13and this time, how many people have turned up this time?
11:15And do you see an age bracket?
11:17Do you see this now as a Yuvah Kranty,
11:21or do you think people across sections have actually come in,
11:25on a call for asking for the resignation of the CEC?
11:34Look, we are reporting this last time,
11:38when the crowd came in Dharmey Indra,
11:40there were a lot of young people,
11:43and this time, you will see more of the young people.
11:46Although the middle-aged people have also come,
11:49but they don't have enough of that.
11:51There are a lot of young people,
11:53there are a lot of young people,
11:53and there are a lot of young people who have went,
11:56but in Mumbai, some people came,
12:02some people came, some people came,
12:03some people came, some people came,
12:04some people came.
12:04I have talked to them,
12:06who were travelling before 3am,
12:09and probably for the time.
12:11They were the opportunity that
12:12there were 1 walk allowed.
12:15They were not the right one.
12:17They were impartial.

45:22And a possible Iran connection, being raised by US and Israeli officials.
45:28US President Donald Trump has said he's looking into reports of a possible Iranian link to the attacker,
45:35and warned that if Tehran is found to be behind the attack,
45:38Iran would face a very strong U.S. response.
45:44Has anybody briefed you about whether or not the guy,
45:49the pilot of the flight and by plane is linked to Iran?
45:52We're working on it right now. They're being very open with us.
45:56I would say the answer, based on what I'm hearing, is yes.
46:01Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu alleged
46:04that the co-pilot underwent Islamic radicalisation
46:07while saying it is too early to conclude that Iran was involved.
46:14And he calls out to the air crew, kill me. Kill me, all right?
46:21So it's clear he was suicidal. That's not a question.
46:24It was clear he was going to down that plane.
46:26Oh, it's not clear, but it looks very likely that he was going to down the plane.
46:31The incident is also triggering a security review in India.
46:36The Civil Aviation Ministry says it is examining the Fly Dubai episode
46:40and reviewing whether additional security measures are required.
46:46As part for wider upgrade, full-body scanners are set to be introduced
46:51at eight Indian airports in the first phase.
47:13What began as a terrifying cockpit attack is now raising much bigger questions
47:18over the possible Iran connection, the wider regional tensions
47:23and the risk of adding yet another flashpoint to an already volatile West Asia.
47:29The big question that remains, was this an isolated act or a part for much bigger plot?
47:37We are a report, India Today.
47:45All right, with that, we're going to wrap this bulletin.
47:47But before that, on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi,
47:50Prime Minister Modi paid his respects to Bapu
47:53and attended a prayer meeting at Gandhi's Priti as well.
47:55We leave you with these visuals. Thanks for watching.
47:57Good-bye.
48:06You
48:07you
48:08you
48:08Oh
