People are buying Huskies because of Game of Thrones, then surrendering them when real life doesn’t match the fantasy. The video looks at how the HBO series and its dire wolves sparked a surge of interest in Siberian Huskies and similar breeds, and why shelters have seen more of these dogs being given up.

Rescue workers explain that many adopters are drawn in by how cute and wolf-like the dogs seem on screen, but don’t research the breed first. Huskies are active, high-energy, escape-prone pack dogs with a strong prey drive, which makes them a poor fit for some homes, especially those with small animals. The story follows shelter concerns, adoption fairs, and the heartbreak of trying to rehome more than 40 Huskies and husky mixes.

This is a pet adoption and animal rescue story with a clear message about responsible dog ownership, breed research, and training before bringing a Husky home. It also highlights how pop culture, TV fandom, and the Game of Thrones dire wolf craze can affect real-world animal shelters.

For viewers searching for Husky adoption stories, dog breed advice, animal rescue news, Game of Thrones and dire wolves, or responsible pet ownership videos, this is a thoughtful watch. It also fits searches for Siberian Husky care, high-energy dog breeds, shelter surrender stories, and dog training guidance.

00:08when you and your family set out to adopt a dog you might have a certain breed in mind maybe
00:14your
00:14kids love 101 Dalmatians and you can't imagine your house without a spotted friend all your own
00:20however as much as you might love that particular movie you owe it to yourself and your family and
00:27the pooch you adopt to do your research there's more to a dog than how it may appear on the
00:32big
00:32screen if you don't properly prepare you run the risk of facing certain consequences and maybe even
00:39having to do something awful to correct your mistake sadly that's exactly what's happening
00:45with one particular breed of dog right now and it's all because of the popular HBO show Game of
00:51Thrones if you love HBO series Game of Thrones then you're familiar with dire wolves the giant wolf
01:00species that's featured prominently in the show most however are not aware of a certain side
01:06effect that these canines have had in the real world while one of the dire wolves on the series
01:11was indeed played by an arctic wolf the others are played by northern Inuit dogs a close relative of
01:18the Siberian Husky sadly since the show began in 2011 shelters have reported an increase in the
01:25number of Huskies and similar breeds surrendered into their care there's been an increase over the
01:33last several years and the last three in particular said Angelique Miller president of the northern
01:38California sled dog rescue last year and this year we've really seen an increase that's about twice
01:45what we would normally see unfortunately it's all because of the Game of Thrones but how do they
01:51know and why is this even happening the reason shelters like Angelique's believe Game of Thrones
01:58is behind this phenomenon is simple most of the time the dogs are named after dire wolves and even other
02:05non-wolf characters from the show that evidence seems convincing enough at our adoption fair on Saturday
02:13this young couple were just walking by and they stopped said Angelique they looked at our Huskies and
02:20the first words out of the guy's mouth was dire wolves it's pretty obvious too because people come by the
02:26fairs and they want to know if the dogs have any wolf in them because they can't really tell the
02:31difference between a Husky a Malamute and a wolf the problem isn't with the Huskies either the issue
02:39is the people adopting the breed didn't do the necessary research they're so cute in the shows so a
02:46lot of people go and buy these dogs as puppies but they don't do any research on the breed said
02:51Angelique
02:52this is not a breed for everybody the breed is very active they have a lot of energy so they
02:58need a
02:58lot of exercise they have an extremely high prey drive so we will not adopt these dogs out to anyone
03:05who has any type of small animal they're escape artists too so if they get bored they'll get under
03:13your fence said Angelique and they're pack animals they do like to be with other dogs and they do like
03:19to be with humans and they like to be inside when you're at home Angelique's organization currently has
03:27more than 40 Huskies and Husky mixes that are in need of homes they want to find them all places
03:33to
03:33live but it's tough work each year we seem to be getting more and it's a challenge because we need
03:39to try and find homes she said Angelique's isn't the only organization that's seen as surgeon Huskies
03:46being surrendered either the Bay Area Siberian Husky Club has also seen a rise we've gotten three dogs
03:53named ice in the last three months said Randy McQueen a representative of the group most of
03:59them are coming to us between 18 months and two years old Huskies can make for amazing pets but
04:06potential dog owners must do their homework before bringing one home people really need to research
04:12the breed before getting it and if they get it they need to sign up for a certified training course
04:17and
04:18get training for the dogs said Angelique it's heartbreaking that people are giving up these
04:24beautiful dogs just because they didn't think to do a little bit of research on the breed they deserve
04:30to live in homes with people who adore them
