Did you know that your Jellyfin server can play retro games with Jellyemu
Transcript
00:00Hey, did you know that your Jellyfin server can play retro games?
00:03All you have to do is search Jellyemu, go to the GitHub repo, grab the link.
00:08Now, in your Jellyfin server, go to Dashboard, Plugins, Manage Repositories, New Repository,
00:16add the link, give it a name, I usually put the same name as the project, and hit Add.
00:22You might need to reboot this server now.
00:24After the reboot, a new section will appear under Plugins called Jellyemu.
00:30Here, you'll need to add some API keys for the metadata.
00:34We will want our games to look good.
00:36Speaking of games, now from the Dashboard, we will need to go to the Library section,
00:41add Media Library, you'll need to select the content type as Books, this is very important,
00:47and then select the folder where you have the ROMs.
00:51And that's pretty much it.
00:53There are a few issues with this setup.
00:55First of all, unlike MB, Jellyfin doesn't have a specific section for games,
00:59and it abuses the Books section.
01:02The Jellyfin's devs were not pleased with this.
01:05There are some other issues with this setup.
01:07If you have books in your media server, this might talk some unwanted things that aren't
01:13games located in other folders as games.
01:16Like, when I got the eek the cat cartoon a while back, the extra folder had the NES games
01:22in it, and I found out this way.
01:24But hey, it did tag it properly.
01:26Another issue that I don't like is that since the games are marked as Books in the Library
01:32tab, they'll show up as Books during a search, and if you have real books, they will be added
01:39to that section, which makes things harder to find.
01:42Another annoying thing that I found is that sometimes the system will not identify games
01:48properly or add the proper thumbnail, so I have to manually add that.
01:53But if you are a crazy person like me, who wants to have all of their media in one place,
01:58this has been awesome so far.
02:00The emulation has been solid for me, and it can run games up to the PS1 and DS.
02:07You can also add games that cannot be played for display purposes.
02:11There are some pretty good options here, including several CRT filters for a truly retro vibe.
02:16I kinda wish that the video player had this option.
02:20Retro achievements are also present, but for some reason, they didn't trigger for me.
02:25Hopefully, in the future, this issue can be fixed, and also the Jellyfin team can add
02:30some official support for this, since this is awesome.
