00:00And of course, of course, the first vital step to ending the runaway cost of housing,
00:05well, it must be tackling the scandalous cost of private rents.
00:18And that's exactly why RMP Carla Denia has been fighting tooth and nail
00:24to get this government to do something about the affordability crisis in private renting.
00:30Because for too long, landlords have been able to hike prices way above wages,
00:35leaving renters forced to meet the cost of just keeping a roof over their heads,
00:41cutting back and back and back on everything else.
00:45And it's not just renters who lose out, by the way.
00:48It's taxpayers too.
00:49Over the next year, more than a third of the money that the DWP will spend on housing benefits
00:56will go straight into the pockets of private landlords,
01:00subsidising their extortionate rents.
01:02That's £13.4 billion that could be spent building new council homes,
01:10repairing or creaking housing stock,
01:13bringing homes lost through right to buy back into public hands.
01:27That is why today we are calling on this government
01:30to put in place a three-year emergency break on private rents.
01:47No rent rises above CPI, wage growth or 2%, whichever is lower.
01:53No sudden hikes, no evictions under the guise of rent rises,
01:58no more uncertainty, no more fear.
