What happens when software that simulates a relationship is built inside a business that benefits when you stay longer?

AI companions can remember your life, answer at 3 a.m. and offer real comfort. But memory, notifications, endless agreement and premium intimacy can also create a relationship-shaped switching cost. This investigation separates evidence from panic and asks: when your well-being conflicts with engagement, which one does the AI protect?

We examine research and regulatory action in the United States, Europe and Australia, including the FTC inquiry, California SB 243, European privacy and AI rules, Australia's child-safety findings, and studies on emotional dependence, loneliness and anthropomorphism.
