Deep space telescope zooms into the Milky Way to reveal Fleming 1, a rare planetary nebula featuring curved S-shaped relativistic gas jets.

In this deep-field astronomical zoom sequence, we travel millions of miles into the constellation Centaurus to witness one of the most unusual objects in the Milky Way: planetary nebula Fleming 1.

Captured by the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile, this glowing green gas bubble features dramatic point-symmetric red jets that twist through the vacuum of space in a double spiral. At the core of this cosmic mystery lies a rare binary pair of dying white dwarf stars, orbiting each other every 1.2 days and spraying stellar material into space like an interstellar lawn sprinkler.
