00:02This is the coronation of a new king of Toro. His name is Edward Rukidi Nyabongo the first.
00:11But to understand what this means, you need to understand what the kings mean to the people
00:17here. This king does not govern Uganda. He has no executive or political power. His role is
00:24culture. But the selection of King Edward Nyabongo the first was not so straightforward because the
00:31royal family went through a series of disagreements on who should succeed King Oyo. With the Toro
00:37queen mother and the sister of the late King Oyo dismissing Nyabongo's ascension to the throne,
00:43claiming King Oyo had a previously undisclosed biological son who should have been handed
00:49the crown instead. And the king had set this out in his will before he died.
00:55The kingdoms reflect pre-colonial Uganda where these kingdoms and the chiefdoms offered leadership
01:04to the community. But now Uganda being a republic, they have the influence but do not have the
01:10executive powers. The executive power belongs to the republic. President Chowere Museveni,
01:15who attended the coronation, emphasized why he took a decision to return the kingdoms. He wanted
01:22Ugandans to have their sense of identity, not compromised, even when in the past, in the 1960s,
01:30these traditional kingdoms had been abolished.
01:33The problem was the heretic leaders trying to continue with political power. But I could see
01:43that there were very big areas of society which were not addressed. It was very dangerous.
01:52More than two million people live in the wider Toro sub-region. And the Omokama is an important
01:59symbol of their shared identity, history, and culture. The people of Toro now have a new king,
02:07Edward Rukidi Nyawongo I, who succeeds King Oyo Nyimba Kawamba Yiguru Rukidi IV. King Oyo ascended to the throne at
02:20only the age of three,
02:22century. And for more than three decades, he was the face of Toro, until last month when he died of
02:30cancer in the United States, where he was receiving treatment.
02:34This is when now his cousin was selected to succeed him. What is before the new king, Edward Nyawongo, is
02:44a big task.
02:46He comes to leadership at the time when his kingdom, more than half the population, are below the age of
02:5330.
02:53That's a very active and young population with a big future. Himself will be 56 this December.
03:01But he has promised the people of Toro, he will unite them, regardless of their age, regardless of their background.
03:10The kingdom will inspire people to work together, because united teeth can break the bone.
03:19And by supporting the kingdom, the kingdom also supports them.
03:25But even if the new king can unite his subjects, winning the support of the entire royal family could prove
03:33to be his greater challenge.
03:34The kingdom and spaceman.
