00:00Thousands of people gathered in western Uganda on Saturday to pay their final
00:04respects to King Oyo. Once recognized as the world's youngest monarch, Oyo died
00:10last month at the age of 34, unmarried and without an official heir. Now a
00:17fight is underway over who will succeed him, pitting the royal clan against Oyo's
00:23immediate family. Both men and women of the Babito clan sat down under the
00:32Masuga, sat down and agreed on one thing and elected the king. I want to announce
00:40that that king is Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I.
00:48Uganda is a republic but recognizes tribal monarchs. They have little political power
00:54but have authority as cultural guardians. President Yoweri Museveni urged a swift
01:00resolution to the dispute in a statement read out at the funeral.
01:05We shall be happy to work with the king as we did with His Highness Oyo.
01:26Oyo's sister Ruth has rejected the selection of Edward. She says Oyo had a
01:31biological son he designated as his heir but tribal officials say they've never
01:37heard of him. Succession, I think it is right, your own biological son, to be the successor.
01:48But to this case here, what I'm seeing, there is some hesitation. They are hesitating over
01:54the successor. I think that's why they came up with this other decision. So for that case,
02:02I have no problem. The question of Oyo's successor could still go to the courts. For now,
02:10his mother has called on those fighting over the throne to give her time to mourn her son.
