00:00From this day on, the Belmont clan will hunt the knight!
00:05Welcome to MojoPlays, and today we are paying respect to our favorite heroes across the Castlevania games.
00:12You claim to love the darkness. Go then and dwell there for all eternity.
00:18But before we dive in, we publish new content all week long, so be sure to subscribe and ring the
00:23bell to get notified about our latest videos.
00:26Jonathan Morris and Charlotte Auline
00:39Already we're starting with a tie, but the dual protagonists of Portrait of Ruin are equally important and equally interesting.
00:46A descendant of the Belmont clan, Jonathan wields the vampire killer whip, but is proficient in a variety of weaponry.
00:53In contrast, Charlotte is a young witch who can use different spells.
00:57Being able to swap between them on the fly gives you a lot of options in a fight.
01:01But more than that, their dynamic is an engaging one that carries the story.
01:14Jonathan is burdened by family history, only distantly related to the Belmonts, yet still charged with a heavy task.
01:21Charlotte, on the other hand, is book smart and overly confident.
01:25A bright light in the face of the challenge, and perfectly cast against Jonathan's more steadfast demeanor.
01:41Maria Renard
01:49Going from being in need of rescue to a bonafide hero in her own right, there's clearly something to be
01:55admired about Maria Renard.
01:57Introduced in Rondo of Blood, or Dracula X, Maria is another distant relative of the famous Belmonts, yet fights in
02:04a completely different way by summoning different animals, like doves, a cat, and a dragon.
02:16Only twelve at the time of her debut, it was a compelling contrast between her innocent appearance and her absolute
02:22ferocity in combat.
02:24Her determination to do good only grew as she got older, as seen through Symphony of the Night.
02:29Her relentless pursuit to save Richter Belmont showed her compassion was only matched by her will to fight.
02:42Richter Belmont
02:51Speaking of Richter Belmont, we have to include the hero of Rondo of Blood and its remake, Dracula X.
02:57Richter is the classic, cocky, young hero archetype, being one of the younger members of the Belmont clan to take
03:03on Dracula at the time of his game's release.
03:06His combat style was more acrobatic, flipping around the area with ease, and his devastating item crash system could wipe
03:13away enemies with a level of satisfaction unseen in previous entries.
03:25His role in Symphony of the Night adds complexity to his character, brainwashed by Dracula's servant Shaft, to do his
03:32bidding.
03:32To take such a sure-footed hero and corrupt them to be a villain was a compelling turn to take.
03:38My time on this world has come to an end.
03:43Hector
03:43So be it.
03:45I must descend into darkness and reclaim that accursed power once more.
03:51What makes Hector an interesting hero is that he wasn't always one.
03:55Once a general in Dracula's army, he abandoned his master after he grew tired of all the murder, found love,
04:01and settled down.
04:03But in Curse of Darkness, he returns to his wicked ways to get revenge on Isaac, his wife's killer, and
04:08devoted follower of the big bad Drac.
04:11Ah, but you will, Hector, and soon you have no choice. Without it, I could crush you in an instant.
04:18In addition to a rich backstory, Hector uses his gift as a devil forgemaster to summon friendly monsters to his
04:24side, adding a fun layer to combat on top of using standard weapons.
04:29Curse of Darkness is a nice companion story to the overall Castlevania mythos, and Hector is clearly a big reason
04:36why.
04:36Did you betray me? Why did you unleash your hatred upon the humans? When you began slaughtering them indiscriminately, I
04:45had no choice but to disobey you!
04:47Trevor Belmont
04:56As a prequel to the original Castlevania, Dracula's curse follows the first Belmont to put an end to the legendary
05:03Dracula.
05:04The backstory tells us that Trevor Belmont answers a call to stop Dracula despite his clan having been exiled by
05:10the church.
05:11To do such a thing paints him as tough, persistent, and unadorned by any of the romanticism that would later
05:17be layered onto his descendants.
05:19Answer me! Are you the devil forgemaster?
05:22I am. Then this is the hour of your death.
05:26He gets a bit more characterization in Curse of Darkness, being shown as both proud of what he and his
05:32allies accomplished as well as wary and untrusting.
05:35Although the Netflix series did a lot for his popularity, he's still one of the most important Belmonts in the
05:41franchise's history.
05:42I am the one who shall vanquish him. Your meddling is unwelcome. Leave him to me.
05:47Leon Belmont
05:48I do have a weapon, just not my sword. That belongs to the company, and I left it behind when
05:55I gave up my title.
05:56Castlevania Lament of Innocence takes place even further back than Dracula's curse, at the very beginning of the franchise's chronology.
06:04It follows Leon Belmont on a journey that would inevitably lead to his family's centuries-long feud against all vampires.
06:11What makes Leon so compelling isn't just his combat prowess, though the evolution of the franchise's mechanics, such as through
06:18elemental whips, is satisfying.
06:20But there's also the tragedy embedded in every step of his story.
06:37It begins earnestly, with Leon venturing into a vampire's keep to rescue his fiancée.
06:43But with her bitten and turning soon, she compels him to sacrifice her to create a powerful weapon, the iconic
06:49Vampire Killer.
06:51As if that weren't enough, the revelation that his closest friend, Matthias, manipulated the entire situation and would eventually become
06:58Dracula, recontextualizes everything that follows.
07:02I thought that you would understand.
07:07Dawn is coming.
07:11Farewell, Leon.
07:12Soma Cruz
07:20While he starts as an ordinary exchange student in Aria of Sorrow, Soma quickly learns he has incredible power and
07:28an intimidating destiny.
07:29He's another character who brings a new style to the series' tried and true gameplay, able to absorb the souls
07:35of monsters and gain new abilities.
07:37The reason he can wield such might is his fate as the reincarnation of Dracula, killed 36 years prior.
07:56Yet, Soma rejects this, choosing to forge his own destiny rather than simply inherit Dracula's.
08:02This makes him an admirable hero, something that is carried over to the sequel, Dawn of Sorrow, in which he
08:08must fight to save his own life, literally, when a cult tries to take him out in order to find
08:13a new reincarnation for the big bad.
08:28Shenoa
08:44Shenoa
08:46Order of Ecclesia follows Shenoa, a glyph wielder for the titular order.
08:51With a ton of different types of glyphs to learn and wield, the level of variety makes Shenoa one of
08:55the most versatile and satisfying protagonists to control in combat.
09:09She also begins as an amnesiac, driven to uncover the mystery of her past as well as dedicated to doing
09:15her duty for the order.
09:17A hero you can root for, whose moveset is an absolute joy to wield, it's just a shame we didn't
09:23get to play as her more.
09:31Simon Belmont
09:37One of the most iconic figures in Castlevania, at least when it comes to the games, Simon Belmont certainly deserves
09:44his flowers.
09:45The protagonist of the first game, its sequel, and its incredible remake, Super Castlevania IV, Simon is as classic as
09:53it gets.
09:53He's the foundational figure of the entire franchise, the character upon whose shoulders everything else has been built.
10:00Although you obviously don't get much characterization in his games, he's clearly brave and determined to live up to his
10:06family's legacy.
10:07His feats made all the more impressive considering he didn't have access to as powerful abilities that his successors would.
10:14While chronologically he would turn out to not be the first Belmont to defeat Dracula, he will always be an
10:20important figure in Castlevania history.
10:27If you love games, be sure to check out WatchMojo's new game, Terrible Influence, just launched for purchase at TerribleInfluence

10:42Boom!
10:43I can make an apology video.
10:45Oh, you so would!

10:52Alucard
11:03Making his debut in Castlevania III, Dracula's Curse, Alucard was already painted as an intriguing character back then, as the
11:10son of Dracula banding with the forces of good to take down his father.
11:14However, what made him one of the most popular characters in the series was his role in Symphony of the
11:20Night, itself one of the most popular games in the series.
11:24You broke free of my spell! I like that!
11:30Demon! Death is too good for you!
11:33Delving into his father's castle to bring an end to his plots once again, Alucard's fight against his father's legacy
11:39while honoring his mother's memory remains one of the most gripping inner struggles in the series.
11:45Alucard strives to be something better than he was born to be.
11:48It doesn't hurt that his slick movement mechanics, transformative abilities, and arsenal of unlockable weapons make him a blast to
11:56play as.
11:57She also said to tell you that she would love you for all of eternity.
12:02Lisa! Forgive me! Farewell, my son!
12:07Who's your favorite protagonist of the Castlevania series? And who's an underrated hero?
