Dmitri Mendeleev's 1869 periodic system did more than organize known elements.

He deliberately left gaps where he believed undiscovered elements should exist and predicted properties for several of them. Later discoveries—including gallium, scandium and germanium—closely matched important aspects of his predictions.

The periodic system became a powerful framework for understanding chemical relationships.
