Johannes Kepler's investigation of Mars transformed our understanding of planetary motion.
Using Tycho Brahe's exceptionally accurate observations, Kepler discovered that planets follow elliptical rather than perfectly circular orbits. He subsequently formulated three laws describing how planets move around the Sun.
His work became a crucial foundation for Newtonian celestial mechanics.
