00:00A U.S. death row inmate was taken to hospital late Wednesday after an attempt to execute her by two
00:06lethal injections failed.
00:09Tennessee officials were unable to put Krista Gale Pike to death for a 1995 murder after administering two doses of
00:17a lethal drug in what death penalty experts have described as an unprecedented failure.
00:23According to her attorneys and witnesses, Pike was alive and loudly snoring after the attempted lethal injection and was taken
00:31by ambulance from the prison.
00:33We left at, well when they told us to leave at 8.53, Krista Pike was still breathing. They did
00:42two separate rounds of pentobarbital which I've never seen before. The protocol does say that they should do a second
00:49round if the person is still alive.
00:51Now 50, Pike had been scheduled for execution for the killing she committed at age 18 and would have been
00:58the first woman executed in Tennessee in more than 200 years.
01:03An appeals court stopped the lethal injection just an hour before it was to start and hours later, the U
01:10.S. Supreme Court overturned that stay.
01:13Following the failure, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee altered the remaining execution for the rest of the year.
01:19Lee said he had ordered a, quote, comprehensive third-party review to determine exactly what occurred.
01:28It was the second time this year Tennessee has been unable to carry out an execution.
