The twelfth season of the annual million-dollar fish competition begins tomorrow with fishers from near and far expected to come to cast their lines. The NT government is heralding the economic benefits of the event noting more than 80-million dollars was spent around the competition last year. But on the ramps, wharfs and rivers of the Top End, competitors say the experience is about more than just the money.

00:02As an annual tradition gets underway, the Territory Government is hoping to reel in the tourists.
00:07Last year this brought in 6,000 visitors to the Northern Territory in our off-peak season,
00:13which is fantastic for locals but also for our visitors.
00:17100 fish worth $10,000 a catch have been released into Territory waters this year,
00:22in addition to a single million-dollar barra.
00:25The fish are released right across the northern half of the Northern Territory.
00:28There's an opportunity to catch one of these million-dollar fish anywhere you go fishing in the Territory.
00:33While an increasing number of $10,000 barras have been caught in recent years,
00:37only one competitor has ever made the million-dollar catch,
00:40still enough to lure generations of fishers into casting a line.
00:44I hope that's me someday. I really want to win it. If I want it, so much new fishing gear.
00:51Great to get the kids out of the house, anything away from a device, so happy to come down here.
00:55A million dollars would just be a bonus.
00:56I think I'd probably be happier if we landed the million-dollar fish.
01:01I don't know if I'd let him know he landed the million-dollar fish.
01:04But yeah, some would go in his share portfolio.
01:07Doing their research...
01:08In the previous years, they caught in Dinah Beach,
01:13and also they caught at the Wharf, Stocksill Wharf, in 2022, on the 19th of October.
01:21But hesitant to get their hopes up.
01:24Hopefully catch it, but again, chances are unlikely. It's always good to hope.
01:28My chances, mate. Pretty slim, I reckon.
01:31A cast of thousands, hoping they won't let the opportunity slip.
01:34I'll see you next time.
01:36I'll see you next time.
