Stefan Salvatore and Elena Gilbert practice a fake lovers-to-enemies argument in private, staging a mock conflict to make onlookers believe their relationship is struggling. During the act, Stefan steps out of character to express his deep feelings, stating that if he ever said he could not do it anymore, what he actually means is that he loves her. Elena responds in kind, admitting that her indifferent dismissals actually mean she loves him too.

And in Season 4, Episode 6, Stefan and Elena break up with the exact same words: “I can’t do this.” But Elena’s response was simply, “I know.” 💔
