'Alternative Nobel' honours women taking on authoritarian rule, patriarchy and Big Tech

00:02The recipients of this year's Alternative Nobel Prize, officially known as the Right
00:07Livelihood Award, have been announced in Stockholm. The award will be presented to
00:12four winners in the Swedish capital on the 1st of December. They were selected from among 200
00:17nominees from 72 countries. One of them is Jalila Haider, a Pakistani human rights lawyer,
00:23the first female lawyer in the Hazara community. She stood up against ethnic,
00:28state and patriarchal persecution in the belief that no one should be forced into illegality,
00:34according to the jury. The jury justified its recognition of an African organization
00:38known as the Rural Women's Assembly by noting that it had organized rural
00:43Roman in Sub-Saharan Africa into a strong united force defending land, seed and bodily autonomy
00:50against corporate and patriarchal disposition. The Association of Young Georgian Lawyers was
00:55among this year's honoraries in recognition of its work carried out despite political repression
01:00to build and safeguard Georgian democracy and sustaining civic power. Also among the honoraries
01:05is Timnit Gebru, an Eritrean computer scientist who has been challenging concentrated power in artificial
01:12intelligence and pioneering digital technology rooted in justice, lived experience and human agency.
01:18The Right Livelihood Award was established in 1980 by Jacob Johann von Hüksküll, a German-Swedish writer and
01:25philatelist to recognize those who offer practical solutions to the most pressing problems facing the earth and humanity.
01:33The award comes with long-term support to enable the promotion and expansion of the laureate's work.
