During the brutal winters of Alaska, the wood frog achieves a biological miracle that seems impossible. As temperatures drop far below freezing, this small amphibian allows up to two thirds of its body water to turn completely into ice. Its heart stops beating, its breathing ceases, and its brain activity shuts down entirely. To any observer, the frog is clinically dead for months at a time.

Its secret weapon is a massive flood of glucose and urea throughout its bloodstream before the deep freeze sets in. These natural compounds act as a powerful antifreeze inside the cells, preventing destructive ice crystals from rupturing delicate cell walls. While ice fills the spaces between its organs, the inside of every single cell stays liquid and protected.

When spring arrives and the ice melts, the frog simply thaws out from the inside out. Its heart magically resumes beating without any external help, and within hours, it hops away to find a mate. Scientists actively study this unbelievable adaptation to improve organ preservation techniques for human medicine.
