00:00The Sultan of Brunei keeps a $1 billion private air force fleet. One jet in it is valued at $600
00:06million. It has gold taps, a master bedroom, and a hold once fitted for horses, and the man flying
00:11it is often the Sultan himself. So what is actually parked in that hangar? Let's break it down.
00:16The jet with gold taps, Hassanal Bolkia, landed at the ASEAN summit in the Philippines in 2026
00:22with his own hands on the controls of a Boeing 747-8. The jet wears the registration V8BKH,
00:29and luxury outlets put its all-in value at around $600 million.
00:34Other heads of state arrive in government transports flown by air force crews.
00:38The Sultan of Brunei is a qualified aeroplane and helicopter pilot,
00:42and he has been reported and photographed flying the jumbo himself.
00:45That jet does not belong to an airline. It belongs to an operation called Sultan's Flight,
00:50set up in 1979 and based at Brunei International Airport in Bandar, Saribagawan. It carries the
00:57IKO code SFB. It sells no tickets and carries no paying passengers. The whole outfit exists for one
01:04family, one entourage, and one country's state travel. Even the United States government treats
01:09it as a separate thing, with a trade.gov note on Brunei's commercial aviation sector confirming
01:14the private royal fleet as its own operation beside the national carrier. There are no customers on
01:19board. The passenger list runs to the Sultan, the immediate royal family, senior officials,
01:23a personal entourage large enough to fill a widebody, and the occasional high-level guest
01:28picked up during an official visit. The aircraft function as Brunei's version of a presidential
01:32transport, and they are the reason a country of under half a million people keeps jumbo jets on its
01:38books at all. The 747-8 is the newest headline piece, and its paperwork is public even when its
01:44cabin is not. Aviation database is listed as a 747-8LQ, with manufacturer serial number 41060,
01:53delivered around September of 2016. Boeing built fewer than 50 passenger versions of the 747-8 in
02:00total, and a handful of those went to governments and royals rather than airlines. Business Insider
02:05counted Brunei among the small group of states still flying the jumbo for VIP work long after most
02:10carriers retired theirs. Europe has seen it too. In 2025, Hungarian press covered the arrival of the
02:17Brunei Royal 747 in Budapest and described it as one of the most expensive aircraft in the world.
02:23In 2024, a Royal Brunei jumbo touched down in Auckland and New Zealand media, ran it as the
02:28floating palace landing in their city. The nickname travels with the aircraft wherever it goes,
02:33but the gold that made this fleet famous did not start with the 747-8. It started with an older
02:38jumbo.
02:39Most of the viral stories about a gold interior trace back to a Boeing 747-400 that began life
02:46with Lufthansa. Fleet records tie that airframe to the registration V8 Ali with manufacturer serial
02:52number 26426. It was a used commercial jet before it became a palace. Somebody bought a plane built to
02:59hold hundreds of economy seats and had almost all of it torn out. The aircraft collected two nicknames
03:04along the way, and the press still uses both. Some outlets call it the flying palace. Others call it
03:10the floating palace. Either way, the label sticks to whichever Brunei jumbo is in the news that week,
03:15which is part of why the story has stayed so slippery for 15 years. The numbers attached to
03:19that rebuild have been repeated for more than a decade. Forbes put the story in print back in 2011
03:24and reported an airframe purchase around $100 million, with roughly $120 million more spent on the
03:31interior. Auto Evolution later ran the same aircraft as the most expensive private jet in the world,
03:36and Supercar Blondie revisited the refit again in 2025, under the line that the Sultan turned a Boeing
03:42747-400 into solid gold. Add the airframe and the fit-out together and different outlets land anywhere
03:49from $220 million to over $500 million for that single plane. The purchase price is where the reporting
03:55falls apart. Some sources put the airframe at $100 million, others push it as high as $400 million.
04:01Several say it came through Lufthansa directly. Forbes in 2011 is the earliest widely cited English
04:07language account of the $100 million plus $120 million split, and almost every luxury site that
04:12followed has recycled those same two numbers and the same nickname, which means one article from 2011
04:17is quietly holding up an entire genre of videos and blog posts. So what did $120 million buy inside an
04:23airplane? Start with the metal. Reporting on the cabin describes gold-plated fixtures running
04:28through the aircraft, including taps, handles, and fittings. The washbasins are the detail that
04:33made the story famous. They have been described as solid gold, or heavily gold-plated, and they are
04:38usually mentioned in the same breath as lily crystal, the French glasswork more often seen in
04:43a collector's cabinet than at 30,000 feet. Then there is the layout. The cabin is reported to hold a
04:48master suite, with a full bedroom and a private bathroom attached to it. There is a formal dining room
04:53built for proper banquets in the air. There is a conference and business area with remote-controlled
04:58systems, so state business does not have to wait for wheels down. Several separate lounges sit around
05:03those rooms, filled with large leather sofas and club chairs, and the floors and walls are finished
05:08in custom carpet, hardwood paneling and inlays of gold and lapis lazuli. The galley is the part aviation
05:14people find strangest. It is specified high enough to support Michelin-starred chefs who travel with the
05:19sultan, which means the kitchen on board is closer to a restaurant line than to an airline trolley bay,
05:24and the tanks were reworked too. Reports on the aircraft cite extended range fuel capacity,
05:29allowing non-stop flights beyond 15,000 km, which is the difference between Brunei to Europe in one
05:35hop and Brunei to Europe with a fuel stop where somebody else's ground crew gets to look at your
05:39airplane. Luxury launches return to the same aircraft again in 2025, and the framing has barely
05:44moved in more than a decade of coverage. It is consistently described as one of the most lavishly
05:49appointed private widebuddies ever built, and the reason that claim survives is that almost nothing
05:54has come along to beat it. Airlines stopped buying four-engine jumbos. Billionaires moved to smaller,
06:00faster, cheaper aircraft. A gold-fitted 747 with a dining room in it now belongs to a period of spending
06:06that effectively ended. The strangest specification of all sits in the historical record rather than in
06:11the cabin. German Aviation Coverage and the trade outlet Haviation both note that at least one 747
06:18in this fleet was fitted with horse stalls. The sultan plays polo. Polo ponies are worth serious
06:23money and serious money does not travel in a cargo container if the owner has a jumbo jet. The pilot's
06:29seat is the detail that separates this from every other royal transport on earth. Reporting on a 2013
06:34visit to Washington, has the sultan arriving with President Obama, remarking on the fact that he had flown
06:40himself in. He reportedly took the controls again into the Apex summit in Peru in 2024. Heads of state
06:46normally sit in the back while somebody else works. This one files a flight plan. None of this comes
06:51from a royal press office. There is no official media kit for the inside of these aircraft. What
06:55circulates is secondary reporting, plus a small pool of photographs, most of them attributed to
07:01Instagram accounts connected to the court, recycled from luxury blog to luxury blog, until the same six
07:06pictures illustrate 40 different articles. Business Jet Traveler put the Brunei fleet in its own survey of
07:12the outer edge of private aviation under the heading that the sky is the limit, which is about as close
07:16as the trade press gets to throwing up its hands. Here is where the famous jet sits now. In recent
07:22fleet
07:22snapshots, the 747-400 has dropped off the active list. One database entry places V8 Ali in storage at
07:30Marana in Arizona, a desert field where old airframes go to sit in dry air. The most photographed flying
07:35palace on earth may be parked in a boneyard, which raises the obvious question. If that jet is out of
07:41service and the 747-8 is only one aeroplane, where does a billion dollars come from? Everything else in
07:48the hangar. The Sultan does not fly one jet. He runs a fleet and the rest of it is easier
07:54to count than the
07:54gold. Aviation databases currently list three active government widebodies out of Brunei,
07:59with a fourth aircraft on the way. Alongside the 747-8, there is a Boeing 787-8 BBJ-registered V8OAS,
08:09manufacturer serial number 44,572, delivered in December of 2018 and in service from March of 2019.
08:18The 787 is the modern choice. It burns far less fuel than a jumbo, and it can still cross
08:24oceans, which makes it the sensible aircraft for a trip that does not need four engines and a banquet
08:29hall. Under that sits the veteran. A Boeing 767-200R wearing V8 MHB was delivered in February of 2000 and
08:37has been working the fleet ever since. 26 years is a long career for any airframe. It is the workhorse
08:42that goes where a 747 would be overkill. The incoming aircraft is European. Fleet listings show an Airbus
08:48A330-800 in ACJ configuration as a planned VIP airframe for Brunei. The A330-800 is a slow seller
08:56in commercial service, which has made it attractive to governments who want a long-range widebody
09:01without waiting years in a delivery queue. Then there are the helicopters. Short royal hops inside Brunei
09:06use Sikorsky S-70 and S-76 types, the same family of machines used for executive transport and military
09:13work around the world. German coverage of the operation counted three aircraft in regular use
09:18as of the middle of 2022 and noted that gold fittings, taps included, are a recurring theme
09:24across the fleet rather than a feature of one famous jet. Four widebodies and some helicopters is a
09:29serious operation for a country of under half a million people. It is also a shadow of what Brunei
09:34once had. At the peak, the royal inventory was enormous. Types that have passed through Sultan's
09:39flight and the government of Brunei include several Airbus A340-200s, a Boeing 747SP, a Boeing 757,
09:47multiple Boeing 727s, and a run of Gulfstream III IV and V business jets. Registrations such as V81,
09:55V8AC3, and V8AM1 sat on those older Airbuses, and the V8BKH code now worn by the 747-8 was carried
10:03by an A340 before it. One of those Airbuses was unlike anything else ever built. Airbus produced a
10:08single A348000, manufacture a serial number 204, an ultra-long-range special with extra fuel tanks,
10:15and a range past 8,000 nautical miles created for the Brunei royal family. It was the longest-legged
10:20airliner of its moment, built so one customer could fly further without stopping. It then sat unused for
10:26a period and eventually left the fleet. Airbus never built a second one. The scale of the 1990s is
10:32the part people struggle to believe. Spending by the Sultan and his brother Prince Jeffrey at the
10:37height of the boom produced a Hollywood Reporter recap that put the family at 17 private jets in
10:42that era. Most of those airframes were later sold, stored, or handed over. Understanding why
10:48means leaving the hangar for a moment. Brunei's money is oil and gas. Hassanal Bolkiah has ruled
10:54since 1967, and he holds the offices of Prime Minister, Minister of Defense, and Minister of Finance
10:59alongside the throne. Published estimates of his personal fortune usually land in the $20-30
11:05billion range, and those numbers are lower than the 1990s peaks, when he was routinely described
11:10as the richest man alive. The line between the state's oil wealth, the royal family's holdings,
11:15and the Sultan's personal property has never been drawn in public. The drop has a cause with a name.
11:20His younger brother, Prince Jeffrey Bolkiah, born in 1954 and once Brunei's finance minister,
11:26ran the Brunei Investment Agency and the Amedeo Development Corporation through the boom years.
11:31After the Asian financial crisis of 1997, an audit alleged that roughly $14-15 billion had been
11:38diverted. A settlement in the year 2000 returned an extraordinary list of assets to the state and
11:43the Sultan, including homes, planes, yachts, and more than 2,000 cars. Many of the aircraft that
11:49made the 1990s fleet look bottomless were sold or parked after that. It is worth saying plainly that
11:54these are allegations and a civil settlement rather than a criminal verdict, and the research on this
11:59period comes from court-related reporting rather than published royal accounts. What is not in
12:04dispute is the effect. The royal inventory shrank, the airframes moved on, and the family's public
12:09wealth estimate has never returned to its 1990s level. Jeffrey was one of 10 children. The others
12:15include Prince Mohammed Bolkiah, born in 1947 and a former foreign minister, Prince Soufri Bolkiah,
12:21born in 1952, and six sisters including Princess Masna Bolkiah and Princess Norain Bolkiah.
12:27Their mother, Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Damit, died in 1979, the same year Sultan's flight was founded.
12:34The man at the center of it is worth knowing properly. Hassanal Bolkiah was born on the 15th
12:39of July, 1946, at Istana Darussalam in what was then Brunei town. He is the eldest son of Sultan
12:45Omar Ali Saifuddin III, the 28th Sultan, who modernized Brunei after the Second World War,
12:51abdicated in favor of his son, and lived until 1986, long enough to see the country he handed over
12:57become independent. The ruling house, the House of Bolkiah, traces itself back to Sultan Muhammad
13:02Shah in the 14th century. He was made Crown Prince in 1961 at the age of 15. He studied in
13:08Brunei,
13:09at the Victoria Institution in Kuala Lumpur, and at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1966 and 67.
13:16His father stepped down in October of 1967. He was proclaimed Sultan the next day,
13:21and he was crowned on the 1st of August, 1968. He then led the talks that took Brunei to full
13:26independence from Britain on the 1st of January 1984. As of 2026, he is 80 years old and the
13:33world's longest reigning current monarch. The family that fills those cabins is large. He has
13:38been married three times, which Bruneian Islamic law permits, and only the first marriage remains in
13:43force. Queen Saleha, his first cousin, married him in July of 1965 and had six children with him,
13:49including Crown Prince Al-Mutadi Billah, born in February of 1974, heir apparent since 1998 and
13:56senior minister in the prime minister's office. The Crown Prince and Crown Princess Sarah have
14:01four children of their own. His second wife, Mariam Abdul Aziz, was a Royal Brunei Airlines flight
14:07attendant. They married in 1981 and divorced in 2003. His third, Azrinaz Mazar Hakim, was a Malaysian
14:14journalist. They married in 2005 and divorced in 2010. Official counts give him five princes and seven
14:21princesses, 12 children in all. One son, Prince Abdul Azizm, died in 2020 at the age of 38. Another,
14:28Prince Abdul Mateen, born in 1991, married Anisha Razna in 2024 and had a daughter in February of
14:352026. The throne itself passes down a male preference line limited to legitimate Muslim
14:41male descendants of Sultan Muhammad Jamalullah Lam II, and the next name after the Crown Prince
14:46belongs to his eldest son, Prince Abdul Muntakim, born in 2007. In June of 2026, the Sultan reshuffled
14:53his cabinet and handed ministerial posts to sons including Prince Abdul Malik and Prince Abdul
14:57Mateen. The passenger manifest and the government are now close to the same list of names. The country
15:02underneath all of this is an absolute monarchy running on oil and gas revenue, where citizens
15:07receive extensive state subsidies and the royal household draws from the same well. When the Sultan
15:12is not working he plays polo, squash and badminton, and the polo habit is the thread that connects the
15:18palace stables to the horse boxes fitted inside a jumbo jet. So the fleet is real, it is old, and
15:23it is
15:23smaller than it once was. Which brings us to the number in the title, and to the other hangars, garages
15:29and
15:29stables it has to compete with. The number, nobody can actually prove. The Sultan of Brunei's jets are
15:35not the most expensive thing he owns, they are not even close. Start with the house. Istana Nurul Iman
15:41in Bandar Seri Begawan is listed by Guinness World Records as the largest residential palace on earth.
15:46It covers about 200,000 square meters, which is roughly 2.15 million square feet. It holds 1,788 rooms
15:54and 257 bathrooms. The banquet hall seats 5,000, the mosque holds around 1,500. There are five swimming
16:02pools, 564 chandeliers and 51,000 light bulbs. It was completed in 1984 at a cost commonly cited at
16:10about 1.4 billion dollars in the money of that time. It is also the seat of government, and it
16:15opens to the
16:16public only at aid. For a few days a year, ordinary Bruneians walk through the largest private home on the
16:21planet. Shake the Sultan's hand and go back out. The rest of the year, nobody sees inside. The palace
16:27also explains the horse stalls in the jet. The building includes air-conditioned stables for 200
16:32polo ponies and 110 garages. The central dome is finished in 22-carat gold, and the interiors use
16:39gold-woven carpet, Italian marble, Chinese silk and gold-plated door fittings. The gold on the aircraft
16:44is not a one-off decision, it is the house style, carried into the air. Those 110 garages are nowhere
16:50near
16:51enough. The Royal Car Collection is the other signature holding, and it is widely described as
16:55the largest private collection in the world. The conventional figure is around 7,000 vehicles,
17:00with a combined value near 5 billion dollars. Although expert tallies of the documented exotic
17:05and coach-built portion land closer to 2,000 or 2,400 cars, Rolls-Royce alone accounts for 500 to
17:12600
17:12or more of them, with roughly 450 Ferraris and something near 380 Bentleys alongside. The individual
17:18cars are where the money really went. A stretched Rolls-Royce Silver Spur 3333, plated in 24-carat
17:26gold, used for ceremonies and weddings, is valued in reports at around 14 million dollars. Another
17:31ceremonial Rolls-Royce was finished in gold from the grille to the wheels, with an open top and a
17:36platform for an umbrella bearer. The family took all six Bentley Dominator SUVs, a model Bentley built
17:42in the mid-1990s on Range Rover underpinnings at a reported 4 to 5 million dollars each. Decades
17:48before the Bentayga reached showrooms, reports placed somewhere between 8 and 11 McLaren F1s in
17:54the collection out of the 106 ever built, covering road cars, LMs, the GT and the GTR, and at today's
18:00collector prices that subset alone is valued in the hundreds of millions. The Ferraris are stranger.
18:05Pininfarina built six Ferrari F90s on Testarossa mechanicals as a secret project in the late 1980s,
18:12and Ferrari denied for years that the cars existed. Several F512M-based FX specials followed,
18:19at least one fitted with a Williams paddle-shift gearbox. The Ferrari 456 Venice series produced
18:24four-door sedans, five-door wagons and convertibles, some with night vision. Add the running Ferrari mythos
18:30concepts. About 11 F40s, the F50s, a 288 GTO Evoluzione, a run of Porsche 959s, Jaguar XJ220s,
18:40Dauer 962 road conversions, four Bugatti EB110SS, and matte black 550s described as radar absorbing.
18:47The buying was heavy enough to move the industry. The family is credited with taking a large share of
18:52Rolls-Royce and Bentley output in the early to mid-1990s, at a point when both marks were struggling,
18:57which means one Southeast Asian household helped keep two British car companies breathing. Much of
19:02it is now rotting. Cars sit in secure complexes near the palace and at a large site in Jirudong,
19:08often referred to as Bantry, described as eight two-story warehouse buildings behind bomb-proof
19:13gates, with Gurkha and dog patrols outside and passport checks for the rare-approved visitor.
19:18Cars are grouped by brand. Some halls are climate-controlled, others are not, and vehicles left under tin
19:23roofs after technicians departed around 1998 have taken years of tropical heat, rain, and mold.
19:29Leaked photographs from 2001 circulated widely in late 2024 through Instagram accounts, and outlets
19:36including Carscoops and Hagerty published the images of Dusty Rose parked bumper-to-bumper.
19:41Visitors and motoring YouTubers who have been allowed in more recently, including the photographer
19:45Larry Chen, report a split picture, with some cars still presentable and others clearly neglected.
19:50A few McLaren F1s have been shipped abroad for restoration. The collection has never been a
19:55public museum, and there has never been an official inventory. The living collection is stranger still.
20:00Lifestyle reporting describes a private menagerie attached to the palace,
20:05holding around 30 Bengal tigers, plus falcons, flamingos, and cockatoos.
20:09A Bangkok Post interview in 2018 with the Thai trainers who worked there said the program started
20:14with nine tigers and grew through breeding, that a team of about 10 Thai handlers managed the daily
20:19feeding and training, and that the tigers are favorites of the queen consort. The birds are
20:23trained to perform, and visiting dignitaries get shown the show. The gold reaches the ceremonial
20:28objects too. His coronation set includes a golden Chris dagger, a golden spear, and a golden shield.
20:34And at the 1968 coronation, a solid gold hand was used to support his chin, because the jeweled crown
20:40was too heavy to wear unaided. The Royal Regalia Museum in Bandar Sari Begawan shows replicas and some
20:46historic pieces, because the real regalia goes back into the palace after every ceremony.
20:51The family jewels surface at weddings, where a flower diamond tiara in 18 carat white gold,
20:56set with 838 diamonds totaling about 132 carats, estimated at around 10 million pounds,
21:03was worn at Princess Azema's wedding in 2023, and again by Princess Anisha Rosna in 2024.
21:09There is property outside Brunei as well. Through the Brunei Investment Agency and family vehicles,
21:14the royals have held high-end hotels and residences in London, Paris and New York,
21:19a Park Lane mansion in older reporting, and a cluster of houses in Herne Bay in Auckland,
21:24bought around an APEC visit. Current holdings and values are not public. The small extras follow the
21:29same pattern. The Sultan is repeatedly reported to fly a barber in from London's Dorchester Hotel,
21:35with the cost of a single haircut put at $15,000 to $20,000. His 50th birthday celebrations were
21:41reported at $27 million and included a private Michael Jackson concert. His watch collection
21:46has been spotted running through Richard Mill, Patek Philippe and Gemset Rolex Daytonas,
21:51with no public count. Now put the jets back on the table and try to reach $1 billion.
21:56The 747-8 carries a luxury site estimate near $600 million. The historic 747-400 package is quoted
22:03anywhere between $220 million and $520 million all in. Add the 787-8, the 767-200R, the incoming A33800,
22:14the Sikorskys, and whatever value survives in the A340s that have already left. Depending on which
22:19figure you pick for each airframe, the total lands somewhere between the high hundreds of millions
22:24and a couple of billion, and that is the whole problem. There is no official appraisal of this
22:29fleet. No balance sheet has ever been published. No royal household statement has put a number on it.
22:34Every figure in every article about these aircraft traces back to the same small cluster of luxury
22:39outlets recycling Forbes reporting from 2011. The gold work has no auction comparables,
22:44because gold-plated aircraft washbasins do not come up for sale. The $1 billion line is a round
22:50headline number, not an accounting result. The fleet is real. The 747-8 flies, and the Sultan flies it.
22:57The gold is attested across multiple outlets in multiple decades. The billion is a guess wearing
23:02a suit, and the aircraft that earned the fleet its reputation. The ex-Lufthansa Jumbo with the gold
23:07taps and the Lalique crystal and the horse boxes is listed in storage in the Arizona desert.
23:12Somewhere near Marana, under dry air and a lot of sun, sits the most expensive interior ever fitted to
23:18a passenger aeroplane, with nobody on board. If you had that kind of money, would you build a palace
23:23that flies, or would you just buy the airline? Tell me in the comments. Loved this video? Click on this
