Nepal floods: Families of missing Malaysians seek financial moratorium

The next of kin of 55 Malaysians still missing from the Nepal flood disaster have appealed to the government to establish a special mechanism to defer financial commitments, such as a moratorium, to ease their financial burden.  Malaysia Solidarity: Families in Hope (MASFIH) spokesman Dr Manivannan Rethinam said the request covers housing and vehicle loan instalments, insurance premiums and other ongoing financial commitments until the victims' legal status is determined. 00:31He said MASFI had sought an urgent meeting with the Attorney General's Chambers

00:35and Bank Nagara Malaysia, but had yet to receive an update.

00:40Nepal is considering legal measures for individuals, including foreign nationals,

00:45whose status remains undetermined following the floods and landslides,

00:49but Visma Putra said the measures have yet to take effect.

00:53The August 26 floods and debris flow, triggered by ice and rock avalanches in Tibet,

00:59killed more than 1,450 people, with thousands still unaccounted for.
