00:00There was an attempted bomb attack in the UK. Fortunately, it never went beyond an attempt,

00:04and they were all caught. Currently, British authorities suspect that Iran was behind it.

00:07Let's take a proper look at this story today. Let's get right into it.

00:10There were people preparing a bomb attack on the RAF Fairford airbase in southwest England.

00:15These people were traveling in three vans when a local resident reported that suspicious vans

00:19were heading toward the airbase. Upon receiving the report, a British counterterrorism team was

00:24dispatched and arrested five men near the airbase. British counterterrorism authorities initially

00:28detained them on suspicion of violating the Explosive Substances Act, but during the

00:31subsequent investigation, charges of preparing acts of terrorism were added. Although police

00:34haven't officially revealed the substance found in the vehicle, The Guardian reported that following

00:38an analysis of the materials seized from the van, investigative authorities made an initial

00:41assessment that it was consistent with homemade explosives. They are currently investigating

00:44whether it was capable of causing an actual explosion, and as a result, a security alert

00:48was temporarily issued at US military bases in the UK. The Royal United Services Institute in the

00:52UK stated that this incident appeared to be an attempted suicide attack using multiple vehicle-borne

00:56improvised explosive devices. Hundreds of nearby residents were ordered to evacuate due to

01:01this incident, and large drums were found around the vehicles. British media also reported that

01:06these drums were likely filled with massive amounts of explosives, such as ammonium nitrate

01:10fuel oil. Some of the captured suspects were reportedly wearing masks or balaclavas. The locals who reported

01:15it said they were lucky to have spotted them quickly. So who are the people behind this? For now, it

01:19basically

01:19narrows down to two possibilities. Either Iran or Russia. For now, the UK suspects Iran. In the case of RAF

01:25Fairford, the

01:25targeted air base, it has been used as a staging base for US airstrikes against Iran ever since the

01:29Middle East War broke out this past February. US B-Series bombers and B-52 long-range bombers

01:34scramble from here multiple times to carry out operations targeting Iran. And with its long

01:38three-kilometer runway, RAF Fairford is a key European bomber hub for the US military, capable of operating

01:43large strategic bombers, as well as the home of the US Air Force's 501st Combat Support Wing headquarters

01:48and the 420th Air Base Squadron. On top of that, Iran decisively announced back in July that they would attack

01:54this place.

01:54Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps even warned that any base used to invade Iranian

01:58territory would be our legitimate target. That is why the possibility of Iranian involvement

02:02keeps being raised. Another possibility being raised is Russia. While British authorities haven't

02:07officially announced this incident as Russia is doing, given the considerably high tensions

02:11between the UK and Russia, it's only natural for investigative agencies to look into the possibility

02:16of Russian sabotage. In fact, Russia recently took issue with the UK's military support for Ukraine

02:21and even issued warnings that it could target Britain directly. Last August, Russian Foreign

02:26Ministry's spokesperson Maria Zakharova warned that if Ukraine continues to use British-made long-range

02:30missiles against Russian territory, British military targets both inside and outside Ukraine could be

02:34struck. This was a remarkably strong statement as it directly mentioned the UK as a military target.

02:38On top of that, the British government is also publicly claiming that Russia is carrying out

02:42sabotage activities to destabilize European security. The British government recently noted that German

02:47authorities deemed the Russian state responsible for the drone attack at Leipzig airport in Germany,

02:52raising the possibility that the drone incursions, arson, and sabotage incidents occurring across

02:56Europe are linked to Russia's broader activities. That is why the possibility of Russian involvement is

03:01also being raised in this Fairford incident. Particularly given that Russia views the UK as one of the key

03:05nations supporting Ukraine, the potential for sabotage targeting military installations within Britain,

03:09or facilities linked to US-UK military cooperation, could be an area investigators need to examine.

03:14However, based solely on publicly available information, no evidence has been confirmed to indicate that Russia

03:18was involved in this incident. As British authorities are keeping multiple possibilities open as they

03:22conduct their investigation, what matters moving forward is whether the actual mastermind will be identified

03:26through the materials seized from the vehicle, the suspects' communication records, financial flows, and

03:30links to foreign networks. However, President Trump remarked here that the suspects he was about to identify

03:33had intended to deal a major blow, adding,

03:35We kept a close eye on the suspects for a long time and we finally caught them. Although he did

03:39not specifically mention what kind of blow the

03:41suspects were attempting to strike, his remarks seemed intended to highlight that the incident was

03:44prevented through US-UK cooperation while hinting at the possibility of an attempted terrorist attack.

03:49The reason this case is drawing attention isn't just because the terrorist suspects were arrested.

03:53It holds significant security implications in that it showed the extent to which key Western

06:08during this period? The most important things are how long these people have been preparing for

06:11this, what their relationship with each other was, and whether there are any indications that

06:14they received outside instructions or support. Particularly in terror cases, it is crucial not only

06:18to examine the individual suspect's actions, but also to look at the entire process of how the crime was prepared.

06:22What kind of data turns up on electronic devices like mobile phones and computers,

06:26what messages they exchanged, and whether there are records of contact with specific individuals or

06:30organizations could also be important lines of inquiry. Also, by checking where the funds came from

06:34and how vehicles or maintenance were secured, we will determine whether this incident was prepared

06:38by an individual or if it is connected to a larger organization or foreign forces. So, rather than

06:42the fact that five people were arrested in this incident, what connections are uncovered in the

06:45investigation into them going forward could be far more important. As this is currently the stage where

06:49arrests and charges have been made, it is completely different from a situation where the court has
