For centuries, an ancient mountain route remained hidden beneath the ice of Lendbreen, Norway.
As the ice retreated, archaeologists began discovering an extraordinary collection of objects left by travelers who crossed these mountains over many centuries.
Among the finds were shoes, textiles, horseshoes, tools and other everyday objects — materials that would normally have disappeared long ago.
The route was used from roughly 300 to 1500 AD, with archaeological evidence indicating that activity reached its peak around 1000 AD — during the Viking Age.
This wasn't a paved “Viking road,” but a mountain passage connecting communities and travel routes across the Norwegian landscape.
The ice preserved pieces of ordinary life for centuries. Now, as it melts, those objects are appearing again.
