An object once connected to Christian worship was given a completely different life during the Viking Age.
On Oronsay, Scotland, archaeologists discovered metal fittings from a Christian reliquary that had been removed, modified and transformed into shoulder brooches. They were found in a Viking Age female burial dating to the 9th century.
Objects like these reveal how material from the Christian world could be reused and reinterpreted within Norse society. What had once decorated a sacred object could become personal jewelry.
But one fascinating question remains unanswered:
Did its new owner understand the Christian meaning the object originally carried — or was it simply something beautiful and valuable?
