Design, architecture and responsibility come together in Manuele Mossoni’s conversation on how 2M Associati shapes places that can become part of people’s lives for generations. From master planning and architecture to interior design and product design, he explains how a complete design practice creates a seamless way of thinking about space, identity and everyday use.

Mossoni reflects on the responsibility of transforming land, especially when buildings may last for 100 years or more. He also discusses how technology helps designers test multiple scenarios faster, study light, climate and landscape, and make better decisions without replacing human creativity. For him, good design must respond to place: Bali’s culture, weather and rhythms cannot be treated like Dubai or anywhere else.

The conversation also explores scale, from urban planning to the bedside table, and why the best result is when people make a space their own. That sense of lived-in change, movement and customization is the real reward, while ego-driven design misses the point.

Created for viewers interested in architecture interview, design thinking, master planning, interior design, product design and responsible architecture. It is also a strong watch for anyone searching for architecture and responsibility, place-based design, Bali architecture, urban planning commentary, and design leadership insights.

00:04Design is beauty and all of us we like beauty. We love nice things in front of
00:10our eyes. Design is like something that's around us so it's literally like a part
00:16of our life. I'm Manuele Mossoni, the director of 2M Associato, an architecture
00:23studio based in Bali. We start as an architecture studio and then we develop
00:32like a completely designed solution starting from master planning,
00:36architecture, interior design and now product design.
00:43Identity is like a common word but it's really difficult sometimes like to catch
00:48the identity of the place and try to transform that place. As designers we
00:54have like a huge job to do it. We are transforming land that will last for
01:00hundred years that building. So when we transform we cannot cancel and get back.
01:04It's not a painting that you can just remove from your wall. The
01:07responsibility is really to take into the place, transform, hopefully in a better
01:12place. So this is I would say is the most challenging and interesting element that
01:16we always try to introduce into the large-scale project.
01:24Technology is going to be like a big part of our job, not to replace in-house but
01:29helping us to create a multiple solution, multiple scenario that will take like
01:34years for us just to study. We are able to replicate and also to simulate a
01:39different scenario. So how the Sun is going to affect every every villas or every
01:44little building inside the master planning or the most efficient way out to
01:49develop and also to place the green area or what kind of public facility we are
01:55placing there. When we are talking a large scale is a mix of function because we
02:00are not still talking about like a detailed design but the way we shape and we
02:04place the different function are going to affect the life of everyone is going to
02:09live there. So having like the possibility to have multiple solution in a couple of
02:14hours really help us to be a better designer.
02:22We are uncomfortable when we go in a scale of project that is too large. When the
02:27scale is too big was an unsuccessful project. So no one want to live there. The
02:32scale is outside the human scale. It was like done from just a business scale instead of
02:37like a design scale. So what we are trying to do in redesign and master planning we
02:43literally like try to shape in a micro area where everyone in a walking distance
02:47can understand like the neighbor can walk, can cycling, can have his own little
02:54park, try to come back to the smaller scale and reproduce the smaller piazza that
03:00we have for example in Italy. Having like a master plan around the world now we try to
03:05understand also the culture, the temperature, the weather that is quite different. We can't
03:11have the same design guidelines and strategy in a master plan in Dubai and a master plan
03:17in Bali. They are totally different weather, totally different sensation, totally different
03:22culture and we as a designer we need to try to shape our design view not only once all over
03:30the
03:30world and globalize our design but just to be like a really locally understanding
03:36like what they have there and what are the use of that area.
03:48Everything starts because we were looking for new product and then coming back from Italy that we have
03:56like all this big catalog all this beautiful product in Indonesia and I was missing and all
04:01my team was missing like some connection with the product with design production so we
04:07start to do designing for a different brand because we were looking for solution and we
04:12were the first one like proposing them let's do a new product let's invent new one
04:17let's let's do something new. So creating like a sort of seamless solution between master planning,
04:24architecture, interior design, and product design. So the product design was the missing element for us
04:30like to link with our interior design and then create like a unique element. The last piece of a
04:37puzzle that we were looking for for many years.
04:45You need to choose the right people, give the right vision and give the tools to do it. You have
04:51the good
04:52people that they look work it they have the vision that is shape the vision together as a team and
04:58you
04:58give the tools of course if you miss one of them you're not going to get the result so it's
05:04quite
05:04important to get there. The difficulty is like a large scale because you are working basically from urban
05:10planning till bedside tables so it's like really like the scale is so huge but every team is like working
05:16in
05:17autonomous they are great designers here in Indonesia that are working in a different scale and they work
05:23together so that the beauty of having multiple team in the same office that they support and challenge
05:29each other every time so the urban planner challenge the product designer even though they are working
05:35in a totally different scale the meeting in the middle between architecture interior design.
05:46When you design something it's not only for us we don't live there it's you're designing something
05:52for someone else we're really happy when we saw that they customize their space they changes they move
05:58and they they live there so i think is the most important things that they feel that the building
06:06or that design become their design become their part of their life that one i think is that is the
06:13the
06:13biggest one the biggest reward i would say from from our side one of the biggest concern is like
06:21when you start with the ego of a designer and try to to be sure that everyone recognizes your building
06:28the one i guess is uh is a wrong interpretation of the designing because you're thinking more about
06:35yourself instead of thinking about what is the real goals of the design
