The story centers on a legendary multicolored divine stone—originally used by the goddess Nüwa to mend the heavens—of which one fragment fell upon the Buzhou Mountains and was entrusted to the Spirit Fox clan for safekeeping. The protective barrier, maintained for a millennium through the sacrifice of the Fox Ancestor's own lifespan, is nearing its expiration, leaving the clan on the brink of catastrophe. Lu Bai is chosen by the divine stone as the "Holy Son of the Spirit Foxes," thereby assuming the heavy responsibility of its protection. To save the dying Lu Bai, Xiao Jingchen travels to the Spirit Fox Immortal Mountain carrying a "Life-Guard Lock" that houses Lu Bai's primordial spirit. Although Xiao Jingchen is actually the reincarnation of a War Spirit, he keeps this fact hidden from Lu Bai. The Second Prince, Xiao Jinghan, conspires with the forces of Black Wind Mountain to target the pair. Upon arriving at the Immortal Mountain, they discover the barrier has been breached and the mountain overrun by the Wolf-Fang Demon clan, led there by the traitor Lu Fan.
