Refreshed Volvo XC40 and XC60 models take center stage in Gothenburg as Marek gets an early look at what has actually changed. The XC40 brings a revised front and rear design, new matrix LED headlights, updated wheels, a more premium interior, and Volvo’s latest Google-based screen and software interface. The XC60 goes further with a new plug-in hybrid powertrain, a much larger battery, up to around 200 km of electric range in the T6 and about 190 km in the T8, plus updated safety tech and new cabin details.

The visit also covers practical changes that matter in real-world use, from lane change assist and 360-degree camera options to improved storage, four-zone climate control in the XC60 PHEV, and the fact that the battery packaging did not reduce luggage space. Marek also explains Volvo’s revised electrification strategy, the market-specific drivetrains, towing capacity, and why these facelifted Volvo SUVs are more evolution than revolution.

For viewers searching for Volvo XC40 facelift, Volvo XC60 refresh, plug-in hybrid SUV review, Swedish car launch coverage, or a new Volvo infotainment and safety update, this is a detailed first look. It is also useful for buyers comparing compact premium SUVs, PHEV range, and everyday family car features.

00:00hi today i'm in gothenburg sweden this gothenburg is volvo's home and behind me is volvo world a
00:08museum dedicated to the swedish brand's history and heritage but i'm not here just for sightseeing
00:12the main attraction is the secret studios in the heart of the torslanda factory where i'll be one
00:18of the first journalists in the world to see the refreshed 40 series and the xc60 models what's new
00:25let's find out i will start with the smaller of the two models presented today the xc40 when talking
00:38about the 40 series i'm referring to the xc40 ex40 and ec40 the latter being the coupe version of the
00:44electric crossover all three are manufactured primarily in ghent belgium additionally models
00:51for the malaysian and thai markets are assembled in malaysia while the dimensions remain virtually
00:58unchanged volvo is highlighting exterior tweaks including a refreshed front and rear end and of
01:04course the new version of the tor hammer headlights led matrix they currently feature 15 sections which
01:13light the road with a beam which is wide and long but without dazzling everybody
01:19it's just a dazzling design
01:23to say that volvo's been lazy with its second facelift of the xc40 is not saying much we have
01:30refreshed grille or whatever you call the front end in case of the ev variant there are new ish headlights
01:37and tail lamps new wheel designs back in the day volkswagen was criticized for not making the mark
01:436 gulf sufficiently different from mark 5. there are also some modest changes on the inside we have
01:52new more premium says volvo upholstery uh some clever storage like it was but maybe you haven't
01:58seen it before so there you go there's your trash gun yep we've got some ambient lighting down here but
02:06the
02:06uh main change the highlight feature is the new screen which has the same interface as again quoting volvo
02:16here volvo's evs but to be honest it's the same interface in every volvo this one is just the last
02:24one to
02:24receive the new screen the new software and the new interface otherwise if you've seen the old xc40
02:35it is old um it's yeah same old same old i mean you know if you liked your car before
02:41you will like
02:42this one real leather and by the way real leather only on the sorry mild hybrid models the electric one
02:51gets uh like half alcantara have something and you can't have light upholstery in the other one
03:03xc40 is probably the last volvo model to finally get the new interface the car also gets updated
03:09safety features including the beeper warning you against cyclists when you open the door fortunately
03:14it doesn't block the door yet pilot assist which is the advanced adaptive cruise control with lane
03:21keeping assist gets optional lane change assist i asked about the conditions that need to be met for
03:27the system to work in order for the lane change assist to work you need to be on a road
03:32with at
03:32least two lanes in one direction duh and a barrier separating you from oncoming traffic you do not
03:41have to be on a road classified as a motorway as is the case with some of the competitors optionally
03:48there is a 360 camera with a 3d view and guess what it didn't work in the pre-production model
03:55all-wheel drive in petrol cars is for u.s market only in europe we're getting front-wheel drive mhevs
04:02all-wheel drive is available only in the most powerful ev variants of the ex-40 and ec-40
04:11so why did volvo waste its money in our time to show us a car which barely changed
04:19in 2021 volvo announced that by 2030 it would sell exclusively electric cars however just three years
04:25later these plans were revised and the new target is 90 to 100 percent electrified cars by 2030 volvo
04:35adopted a definition similar to the chinese new energy vehicles category meaning electric vehicles as well as
04:42plug-in hybrids mild hybrids are not counted as electrified vehicles according to volvo even though
04:48many car makers also consider this type of drivetrain electrified especially in case of the latest
04:54generation mhevs but that's a topic for another day the point i'm trying to make here is that for a
05:00couple
05:00of years volvo wasn't really focusing on internal combustion engine lineup and now instead of new
05:06generations we're seeing incremental updates to the existing model line like
05:15okay these are mainly new evs but you get the point
05:22meanwhile in the second studio the volvo xc60 awaits this model is manufactured here at the torslanda plant
05:30where we're at and also in charleston us where we're not at here the most important update is the
05:40new generation of the plug-in hybrid powertrain which allows for zero emissions range of up to 200
05:46kilometers versus less than 80 in the previous generation this is made possible thanks to the use of
05:52new electric motor but above all by increasing the battery capacity from less than 15 kilowatt hours
05:58to almost 39 kilowatt hours both are net values and this is where you charge 11 kilowatts ac
06:08but despite the larger traction battery both in terms of capacity and physical size
06:13the luggage space was not compromised
06:17big volvo boot me likey
06:21okay so the new volvo xc60 user interface is basically the same as you've seen in 2025 model but
06:32yeah the screen is mounted slightly different they say it's better integration now of course you get
06:39google with gemini so you can ask it silly questions and
06:43uh yeah hardware on the hardware side we've got new cameras new ultrasonic sensors we've got lane
06:52change assist within pilot assist uh of course we have the new bowers and not new optional bowers and
07:01wilkins audio system premium audio system which i always confuse with wilkinson shaving products
07:08oh you're welcome volvo did their best to tell me what's new here so we've got cloth and wood
07:18in sort of one car as a combination we've got better accent lighting down here and on the doors front
07:26and
07:26rear and um yeah they were really struggling to to tell me uh what's new oh isa isa is easy
07:38to turn off
07:39you just press the left arrow here and uh isa is disabled so yay
07:47there is a change in the back here now i asked about the battery the battery
07:52battery in the phcv is mounted now in the floor across the car and they didn't want to compromise
08:00the ground clearance so they compromised height the rear seat height let's say so the floor is
08:09four centimeters higher than in the previous generation phcv however they did manage to lower this
08:17middle sill it's not like it's the same height but the floor is higher they actually lowered the
08:25sill the the the tunnel regardless of raising the floor now the important business because i mean you
08:33can't really fit your feet here still anyway but the important thing is that you now get four zone
08:39climate control in the xc60 ph ev which apparently was impossible in the previous generation because of
08:48the high tunnel and the battery battery and everything so that's that and yeah now my thighs are in the
08:57air which isn't brilliant but uh there we are then and again refreshed front and rear new paint new wheels
09:07european clients get the b5 mhev with 250 horsepower and all-wheel drive as well as phcvs t6 and t8
09:14both
09:15all-wheel drive with system power output of 262 and 339 horsepower respectively the americans only get the b5
09:24and t8 now the t6 offers around 200 kilometers of electric range while the t8 around 190 kilometers with a
09:3371
09:33liter tank you can expect a total range of more than 1200 kilometers the xc60 can tow up to 2400
09:42kilograms
09:42and take up to 100 kilograms on the roof price of the refreshed volvo xc40 and xc60 go up by
09:51between
09:511000 and 1500 euro depending on the model and the powertrain
10:00and what do you think about the updates introduced to current volvo models is it enough to remain
10:06competitive or maybe you expected more let me know in the comment section below
