Every summer, hundreds of thousands of sockeye salmon battle their way upstream against rushing Alaskan rivers to spawn. Waiting for them at natural choke points like Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park are massive coastal grizzly bears, also known as brown bears.
Standing directly atop thundering waterfalls, these dominant predators can weigh over one thousand pounds. They use lightning fast reflexes to snatch airborne fish straight out of the mist as salmon attempt to leap over the rocky cascades.
A single adult grizzly can consume dozens of salmon each day during the peak run. This intense feeding frenzy allows the bears to build the thick layers of body fat essential for surviving the harsh subarctic winter hibernation.
