00:09injured and now she wants the Miss Universe organization to pay up. Nearly a year after
00:13being seriously hurt when she plunged through an opening on the stage Gabrielle Henry is suing
00:18Miss Universe and Thai pageant producer Miss Grant International for negligence. The beauty queen who
00:23is herself a doctor says the stage lights were so intense that they blinded her leaving her unable
00:28to see an uncovered opening in the stage which she tumbled into. That opening according to her
00:33lawsuit hadn't been clearly marked, barricaded or properly protected and the onus she told GMA was
00:38not on her. I know for a fact I did not trip. I do think it could have been avoided.
00:44I think that
00:44proper measures could have and should have been put in place. It was the responsibility of those
00:51who had organized the stage who had put in the lighting to ensure that the protective mechanisms
00:58were also there that the hole was barricaded or covered. The gap in the stage was roughly five
01:04feet deep and it wasn't a cushioned fall. According to the lawsuit Henry had concrete and lighting
01:08equipment so hard she was rendered unconscious. Her traumatic brain injury turned out to be so severe
01:13she had multiple brain bleeds. Henry wrote in an essay for people all at once a beautiful moment became
01:18a shattered dream. Miss Universe officials initially appeared to brush the incident off calling her
01:23injuries a couple of minor wounds but later changed that assessment saying it took full and
01:28immediate responsibility without hesitation including footing the bill for her doctors. The road to
01:33recovery has been painful and difficult including long hospital stays both in Thailand and Jamaica
01:38not to mention completely derailing her ophthalmology residency. Henry says quote the injury
01:43permanently altered the course of my life.
