There are three nutrition labelling tools on food packages sold in Canada that can help you understand what’s in your food and compare products in order to make more informed decisions. These are the front-of-package nutrition symbol, the nutrition facts table and the list of ingredients.

00:13The magnifying glass symbol on the front of packages
00:16means the food is high in saturated fats, sugars, or sodium.
00:21The Nutrition Facts Table gives more detail about nutrients in the food.
00:25For example, the percent daily values show whether the stated serving contains a little or a lot of a nutrient.
00:335% or less is a little.
00:3615% or more is a lot.
00:39You can also use these values to compare similar foods.
00:42The list of ingredients tells you what the food is made of.
00:46Sugar-based ingredients are grouped together after the word sugars.
00:50This helps you see if sugars were added and what their source is.
00:54Using these tools can help you make informed food decisions.
