China is rapidly transforming the global trucking industry with a new generation of electric heavy trucks that could finally challenge diesel after more than 100 years of dominance. In December 2025, new energy heavy trucks captured more than half of monthly registrations in China, marking a major turning point for battery electric freight. In this video, we break down how Chinese companies such as CATL and BYD helped drive down battery costs with lithium iron phosphate, or LFP, battery technology, why these batteries can survive thousands of charging cycles, and how automated battery swapping is solving one of the biggest problems facing electric trucks. Instead of waiting hours for a massive truck battery to recharge, robotic battery swap stations can replace a depleted pack with a fully charged one in around five minutes. Combined with cheaper electricity, lower maintenance costs, fewer moving parts, dedicated charging infrastructure, clean freight corridors, and lower total cost of ownership, China has created an environment where electric heavy trucks can compete directly with diesel trucks. Battery electric heavy trucks jumped rapidly in market share, while China continues expanding its national network of charging and battery swap stations for commercial vehicles.
Now China’s electric truck revolution is moving beyond its borders. Chinese and Chinese-linked truck manufacturers including BYD, Sany, Sinotruk, Geely’s Farizon, Windrose, and Super Panther are expanding into Europe with electric semi trucks, local assembly facilities, service networks, advanced batteries, megawatt charging, and competitive pricing. We look at Sany’s 636 kWh electric truck with more than 500 km of range, BYD’s manufacturing expansion in Hungary, Sinotruk and Sitrak’s European ambitions, Geely Farizon’s growing presence, and Windrose’s unusual long-nose electric semi that is already being compared with the Tesla Semi. European manufacturers such as Volvo, Scania, Mercedes-Benz Trucks, and Daimler now face growing competition as China leverages the world’s largest heavy truck market to improve electric drivetrains, batteries, manufacturing scale, and charging technology at remarkable speed. From robotic battery swapping and LFP batteries to electric semi trucks, zero-emission freight, China’s EV industry, European truck regulations, and the future of long-haul transportation, this is the story of how China built what could become a true diesel killer and why the next major battle in the global electric vehicle industry may happen on Europe’s highways.
