00:01Just behind me here on the Melba Highway is where tragedy struck yesterday afternoon around 2.40pm.
00:09Now you can see a tree and part of the road barrier has come crashing down there
00:14and that's after a bus carrying 18 people careered off the road after colliding with two oncoming cars.
00:22Now emergency services rushed to the scene but sadly the 52-year-old female driver of one of those cars
00:28could not be saved. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
00:32Now another 21 people were treated by paramedics here, mostly people from the bus.
00:38A teenage boy was airlifted to the Alfred Hospital where he remains today in a critical condition.
00:45A man in his 50s was also taken to hospital with serious injuries and two teenagers, a boy and a
00:50girl,
00:51were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
00:53Now this all unfolded right outside one resident's home.
00:57He says he heard what he's described as an almighty bang before he came running down to see what had
01:02happened.
01:03Here's what he told us a short time ago.
01:04I'm sure it's a huge shock, you know, just going off the road in a bus, big accident.
01:10A lot of them are probably very terrified and still trying to process it when they're getting brought off the
01:14bus.
01:15Unfortunately this isn't the first time this part of the Melba Highway has seen tragedy,
01:19not even the first time this week.
01:21In the last five days there have been two other serious crashes nearby, one of them another fatal.
01:28And locals fear it won't be the last either, with a recent road survey ranking it the sixth worst section
01:33of road in Victoria.
01:35And with the long weekend upon us here and extra people on the roads,
01:39police are warning people to be extra vigilant, extra safe,
01:42so they make it home as they try to piece together what went so horribly wrong here yesterday afternoon.
