01:30that did not erase differences
01:32over issues like Iran,
01:34Taiwan, AI and trade.
01:36The meeting was closely watched
01:38in Europe as every meaningful
01:40agreement between Washington
01:41and Beijing has also an impact
01:43on the EU,
01:44as EU Commissioner
01:45Stéphane Sejourney
01:47told Euronews.
01:51We need a constructive dialogue
01:53between China
01:54and the United States.
01:55And we saw last year
01:56that the escalating trade tensions
01:58between Washington and Beijing
01:59over these issues
02:00could lead to a trade war.
02:02This could also affect
02:03the European economy.
02:04So yes,
02:05I hope this dialogue
02:06will be constructive
02:07and we can reach an agreement

02:33So, Trump hosting Xi
02:34at the White House,
02:35was this primarily a summit
02:37about managing rivalry
02:39or the beginning
02:40of a new friendship?
02:43Oh, I would say
02:44managing rivalry.
02:45And I think both leaders
02:47bring to the table
02:48their own agenda
02:50of that kind,
02:50even though we don't know
02:52all the details
02:52of what came out.
02:54Apparently,
02:54there were no blow-ups,

02:57deeply negative.
02:58On the other hand,

03:23as a success,
03:23but also, you know,
03:25looking over his shoulder
03:26at the American political scene
03:27where, you know,
03:28tougher attitudes on China
03:30are there on both sides
03:31of the aisle,
03:32Democrats and Republicans.
03:33So, you know,
03:34there were certain risks
03:35in coming off
03:37as too much of a success
03:38for President Trump as well.
03:39I think it's somewhere,
03:40you know,
03:41the result comes out
03:41somewhere in the middle.
03:43So, both sides
03:44were talking about
03:45strategic stability,
03:46but underneath
03:48the diplomatic language,
03:49there was enormous mistrust.
03:51So, how far could Trump

03:53reduce tensions?
03:55I think this does,
03:58in some sense,
03:58go a long way.
03:59This kind of very high level,
04:01very personalized diplomacy.
04:04Both leaders
04:04apparently value this.
04:06Both systems,
04:06in a sense,
04:07value this.
04:08You know,
04:08it does make a difference.
04:10The optics matter.
04:12But as you say,
04:13there are a lot
04:13of unresolved issues.
04:14Some of them
04:15are a very technical kind
04:16and not things
04:18without a lot of
04:19preparation beforehand
04:20and agreement beforehand,
04:22not things that were likely
04:23to be settled
04:23at a summit like this.
04:24And so,
04:25the fact on trade,
04:26for example,
04:26that the sort of
04:28trade war truce,
04:29if you like,
04:30has been extended
04:30for another few months,
04:31is something of a success.
04:33But it also leaves
04:34a lot of work to be done.

04:38Trump caused
04:40consternation
04:40among European leaders
04:42by inviting
04:42Vladimir Putin
04:43to the upcoming

05:59diplomatic crisis

06:30Denmark and Greenland,
06:31I think it's fair to say,
06:32will be breathing
06:33this sense of relief,
06:35this sigh of relief,
06:36because the agreement
06:37essentially brings an end
06:39to months
06:40of uncertainties
06:41and diplomatic difficulties
06:43for both parties.
06:45Cast your mind
06:46back to the start
06:47of this year,
06:48where Trump threatened
06:49several EU countries
06:51with sanctions.
06:52Now,
06:53this was in response,
06:55basically,
06:55to them
06:56criticising another threat
06:58he made
06:58that he would
06:59quote-unquote
07:00take Greenland.
07:01Now,
07:02over this,
07:02he cited
07:03national security concerns.
07:05Obviously,
07:05we need to bear in mind
07:06as well
07:06that there are
07:07these,
07:08it's a strategic location
07:09for the US
07:10and the mineral wealth
07:12of Greenland as well.
07:14Now,
07:14when we look
07:15at the agreement itself,
07:16it's not really
07:17a new agreement,
07:18it's more
07:19a rebranding,
07:20adding on
07:21to an agreement
07:22from 1951.
07:23But there are
07:24some key differences here,
07:26one being
07:27Greenland as a signatory,
07:28that's very,
07:29very important,
07:30obviously,
07:30to Greenland.
07:31And then there are
07:32also these clauses
07:33that they've added
07:34that basically closes
07:35the door of Greenland
07:37for mining
07:37and military purposes
07:39to non-EU,
07:40non-NATO countries,
07:42unless,
07:43obviously,
07:43all three signatories
07:44agree otherwise.
07:46And this mining,
07:47Martin Ledegaard
07:48also told me,
07:49is very,
07:50very important
07:50for Nuuk.
07:52We've also heard
07:52this from Nuuk
07:53themselves
07:53because they really
07:55want to exploit
07:56the raw critical materials
07:58that they have
07:59in Greenland.

08:52that the agreement
08:53does stop short
08:54of this call
08:56from Trump
08:57that he wanted

09:02does not do that.

09:04this hasn't stopped
09:05Trump from making
09:06claims in recent days
09:08that the agreement
09:09gives him existential
09:12permanent control
09:13over Greenland.
09:14I put these claims
09:16to the Danish minister
09:17because obviously
09:17I was very interested
09:18to hear,
09:19does Denmark,
09:20does Copenhagen
09:20see this as in total,

09:27in the agreement
09:27that this is
09:28Denmark's sovereignty.
