00:00Negotiations on the contract extension between the Knicks and Connitie Towns have stagnated and as it stands right now, a
00:06deal going into training camp is considered unlikely.
00:10So all offseason, both of these sides have been discussing a deal extensively and talks have been described to me
00:16as cordial.
00:17There just has not been movement on a deal, especially as of late to get something done.
00:22And there's no doubt, people I talk to right now, this is a cloud going into training camp as the
00:28Knicks try to repeat as champions because Connitie Towns would be going into the final guaranteed year of his deal.
00:34He's got a $61 million player option for next offseason and that would mean he has a chance to be
00:41a free agent amid eight or so teams with cap space next offseason and multiple of those teams needing potentially
00:48a big man.
00:49The Knicks do have all season to extend Connitie Towns.
00:53They could revisit conversations at a later date.
00:56We see right there the max extension number that he is eligible for, four years, a little over $270 million.
01:03But the big factor throughout all this is owner James Dolan has made it clear publicly that the team does
01:08not want to go into the second apron.
01:11The team will not go into the second apron moving forward.
01:14This current team right now is not a second apron team, so they're out of that.
01:18But next season, if this same team comes back, they would be a second apron team.
01:23So change is inevitable to some extent.
01:25We've already seen Mitchell Robinson depart via free agency and now a key all-NBA, all-star caliber player in
01:32Connitie Towns, no extension yet.
01:35Josh Hart, another vital player on that historic championship, no extension yet for him.
01:39He's also eligible.
