00:25you could say come down today sham sharania did some reporting saying that the negotiations
00:30between carl the towns and the knicks uh right now not in necessarily the best place what have
00:38you been hearing about where the situation is yeah i mean it's not totally shocking um you know i knew
00:45for a while now that the the knicks were offering him less than the max they were asking him to
00:49take
00:50a discount and it really became an issue and this is because let me back up this is because
00:56the knicks are trying to keep their championship core together uh we know that james don't doesn't
01:01want to go into the second apron and jalen brunson is eligible for a max extension next summer uh og
01:10and anobi's eligible for an extension next summer so then the knicks are watching their money and
01:15giving cat a what is it four years 272 million dollar extension would not be conducive towards
01:23um keeping this core together so they're asking him to take from my understanding it was significant
01:29discount from the max i mean uh and it's just a matter of how much of a discount cat is
01:35willing to take
01:36obviously given sham's report he's not willing to take what the knicks are offering uh what is the
01:43exact offer i don't know i know ian begley from smy reported that it's in the um 50 uh 40
01:5245 to 50
01:53million dollar average range um well that's where the contract might might start and if you do the math
01:58that's well below the max so um not a total shocker another thing to remember here is that this he

02:08still sign all the way up until june so yeah it's gonna be hovering over the knicks certainly during
02:14training camp where he's cat's gonna be asked about his extension but he can still sign it um you
02:20know even you know up to june so you you and i obviously been doing this for a long time

02:26i saw shams's report and i saw some of the stuff that you had tweeted talking about it and what

02:30just say here timing is very interesting too we are a couple of days away from the start of media

02:36and training camp this seems like something that cats camp would obviously want out there to maybe
02:41i don't want possibly put pressure on the knicks does this put pressure on the knicks in any kind of
02:46way um i don't think it does i think you know i never like to guess who's the source because

02:51know working in the business you realize that what might seem like the leak isn't always the leak
02:58but yeah i mean this is you know you see situations where guys get into training camp
03:05and if there's no and even though they're eligible for the rest of the season they say i'm not either
03:10you give it to me now or the negotiation is done in fact that happened with jalen brunson in dallas
03:15uh they were offering him 55 million dollar extension the year before he left um no they weren't offering
03:24them the max 55 million um when they tried to revisit it jalen had jalen's camp had already told the
03:30dallas mavericks no we told you we're not negotiating anymore we gave you a deadline and that was it so
03:36that also happens um that's up to the player cat has a cat has leverage here think about it he
03:42has
03:43all right this the security he has the security of the 61 million dollar player option their option
03:50so he can be like all right i'm you know whatever if you don't want to negotiate with me i'm
03:55just going
03:55to play this out and if i'm great i'll hit free agency when all these teams have cap space and

04:01get my payday and if it doesn't work out i get injured i don't play well i'm playing for 61

04:07dollars next season regardless so uh he has that security blanket and he does have leverage in this
04:13situation he does have the leverage in this situation are you do you feel confident i mean you never know
04:20what these things are negotiations but the knicks obviously should want to get this done do you think
04:24something gets done not necessarily now fans want it to be done now as soon as possible they want
04:29tomorrow yesterday but do you think something gets done between both sides i still do i mean i've been
04:35saying this all along i still i mean you have to understand this is the best situation for cat
04:40um if you think about it and you know how great this last season was playing for a championship you
04:46have to understand too he has a long-standing relationship with leon rose who was his former agent for a
04:52long
04:52time um so i i still think it just because it makes the most sense for both sides uh that
04:59it will get
05:00done but i understand both the hesitancy from both sides not to do it right now given you know what's
05:06on the table yeah i i do understand that and then you also have as a lot of fan you
05:11know this but fans
05:12we've been trying to talk about this you have the josh hart extension of it all there's a you know
05:17the
05:17brunson stuff you've talked about og and anobi who's eventually down the road is going to one
05:21extension too it seems like a lot of decisions uh for the knicks here i guess the last thing i
05:27have
05:27in doing this when we look at all this with the knicks as they head to training camp do you
05:31think
05:31any of this could potentially become a distraction steph at all because that's the thing fans always
05:36worry about too would this become a distraction or is this something because cat has the leverage and
05:41can't play this out through this year that it will not be you know that's tough for me to say

05:45don't think that anything is going to be said publicly like we're not going to go into media
05:49day or after a game and we're going to say cat is this extension weighing on you he's like yeah

05:54what is wrong with these people why aren't they it's not it's not gonna happen right but you know
05:59it did bother him last season when he was involved in trade talks that that became a big factor and

06:06after the trade deadline passed he actually played better and i thought that was because it was like a
06:10weight lifted off his shoulder if you enter a season with this like hanging over your head
06:15you know there may come a point when you become involved in trade talks again because you could
06:20be a free agent after the season and when your future is uncertain that could be a distraction and
06:26it may impact this game it's hard for me to say whether it will or it won't i'm just saying
06:31you can't say
06:31it won't because we've seen something similar like this happen with him just last season that's a great
06:36point about last season and it makes me wonder if you're the next stamp from the next standpoint if
06:41you're looking at this stuff you're saying hey we just saw this last season where i think we all
06:46saw that it clearly impacted his game and then once that weight was lifted he played much better and
06:50obviously he played well into the playoffs that maybe that would motivate you to try to get something
06:54done maybe a little bit more that the knicks would want to say hey we don't want this around the
06:57team we want him to be happy because he wants to be here maybe they'd be a little bit more
07:02motivated to try to get something done just just thinking out there yeah no that's yeah i i see where
07:06your logic there and i i didn't point this out but i should because i did talk to a league

07:11about this and they did say that all the conversations with cat have been cordial this is not
07:17like you know them storming out of the negotiation room saying i can't effing believe this you're
07:23insulting me and it's there's some animosity there um the hope is still from the knicks perspective
07:31that they lock up cat we know cat wants to be with the knicks he said it publicly and he
07:36has
07:36every reason to be he's he's enjoying this spotlight that it comes with being in new york and being a
07:41champion we could all see that with that said it's not done yet and if it's not done in camp
07:47that's
07:48kind of one of those you know benchmarks that you look at is the deal done by camp no is
07:52the deal done
07:53by the trade deadline no you like you you look at those things these these dates and training the
07:58start of training camp is one-on i'm glad you said that about it not being contentious because i think
08:03sometimes when we have news like we did today fans can look at it sometimes and say oh well there's
08:08going to be drama and sometimes sometimes stuff right this is just business it is what it is and
08:13this is what you're going to have at this point in the year and it is what it is like

08:24money is involved the longer the negotiations tend to take especially if it's not as cut and
