00:00Ecuador has a relatively vast land area. Although it may seem small on the map of South America,
00:05there is something extraordinary to be found within its territory.
00:09The scenery changes dramatically even over very short distances.
00:13In just a few hours, you can go from towering snow-capped volcanoes to the almost untouched
00:20forests of the Amazon Pifer, pass through mountains that are always shrouded in clouds
00:25or sea lakes formed inside ancient volcanic craters. The combination of the Andes mountains,
00:33tropical forests, volcanic activity, and geographical isolation has created some of
00:38the most unique and breathtaking landscapes in the world. So get ready because up next
00:44is a journey to 10 places in Ecuador that seem like they're from another world.
01:01Laguna of Quilotoa. High up in the mountains of Ecuador, at almost 4,000 meters above sea level,
01:09you'll find the Quilotoa Lagoon. At first glance, it just looks like a turquoise-colored lake surrounded
01:16by mountains. But in reality, what we're seeing is actually the inside of a massive volcanic crater.
01:24Centuries ago, the Quilotoa volcano experienced its most powerful eruption.
01:30This eruption was so powerful that a large part of its magma chamber was depleted,
01:37causing the collapse of part of the volcano and forming a vast caldera almost three kilometers wide.
01:46Over time, rain and underground water began to fill the crater until the present lake was formed.
01:54One of the most remarkable features of Quilotoa is the color of its water, which can appear turquoise,
02:01green, or bluish depending on the light and the minerals coming from the volcano.
02:07The walls of the crater drop steeply down to the water, giving a unique sense of depth and isolation,
02:15making this place feel almost unreal.
02:19Even today, there are still parts beneath the lake that show activity related to the volcano.
02:35In the far northeastern part of Ecuador, near the border with Colombia, you'll find the
02:41Cuyabano Wildlife Production Reserve, one of the largest, wildest, and most biodiverse regions of the Amazon.
02:49This vast protected area is made up of a complex system of rivers, lakes, and flooded forests that
02:57constantly change depending on the season.
03:01For much of the year, large parts of the forest are covered with water,
03:05creating a landscape where the trees seem to float.
03:11The dark color of the water is associated with the decay of plants and other organic material,
03:17creating a unique environment for a vast variety of life.
03:23Here you can find Pink River Dolphins, various kinds of fish, anacondas, chimons, monkeys,
03:30and hundreds of species of birds living in this almost untouched ecosystem.
03:35In many parts of the reserve, the forest remains intact.
03:39Cotopaxi Volcano.
03:42Amid many mountains stands Cotopaxi.
03:51It stands almost 5,900 meters high, and it is one of the highest active volcanoes.
04:01Cotopaxi is remarkable because of one unusual characteristic.
04:09Its shape is almost perfectly symmetrical.
04:12Unlike many volcanoes, whose shapes have gradually changed and eroded over time,
04:19Cotopaxi has remained almost perfectly shaped, covered with snow and glaciers.
04:25Its unique shape dominates the landscape of Cotopaxi National Park and can be seen from several dozen
04:30kilometers away when the weather is clear. But behind its calm appearance is a very active volcano.
04:41Cotopaxi National Park and can be seen from several dozen kilometers away when the weather is clear.
05:06Pailón del Diablo, in the mountains near the city of Baños, in the central part of Ecuador,
05:12is one of the most impressive waterfalls in the country, the PailĂłn del Diablo.
05:18Here, the Pastaza River rushes down a narrow cliff made of volcanic rock,
05:24before finally plunging as a powerful waterfall over 80 meters high.
05:30What makes this place impressive is not just the height of the waterfall,
05:35but also the force of the water crashing down at the bottom of the cliff.
05:39The intense impact of the water creates a continuous mist of tiny droplets
05:45that envelop the rocks while a loud roar fills the surroundings.
05:49The name of the place is directly related to its unique form and power.
05:55The word pylon refers to a large container that is deep, like a huge cauldron or pot.
06:02It's the shape of the gorge.
06:05Where the water falls, along with its loud noise and bubbles,
06:10is the reason why the locals compared it to a huge cauldron.
06:14Today, there are pathways and viewing areas that allow visitors to get close to the falls.
06:21In some areas, the water falls so close that visitors can be surrounded by mist and the loud roar of
06:29the river.
06:31Nariz del Diablo, in the Andes Mountains of Ecuador, near the city of Alusi,
06:37you can find the Nariz del Diablo or Devil's Nose.
06:41This mountain became famous in the early 20th century,
06:45because it was one of the most difficult parts of the route that had to be overcome in building
06:51the railway connecting the coast of Ecuador to its capital, Quito.
06:56The main problem was the steep slope of the mountain.
06:59Because the area was so steep, the engineers had to come up with a solution.
07:04A highly complex railway system to overcome the extreme height and steepness of the mountain.
07:11To overcome this obstacle, the engineers designed an unusual solution,
07:18a zig-zag railway system that allows trains to descend the steep slope.
07:24In this system, the train repeatedly moves forward and backward as it travels along the side of the mountain.
07:31Because of this efficient system, trains were able to descend more than 500 meters in elevation
07:37over a short distance without losing control on the steep slopes.
07:42Building this railway was extremely dangerous.
07:45Thousands of workers participated in the project under very difficult conditions,
07:50and it took many years to complete.
07:52For a long time, this route was considered one of the most difficult railway routes in the world.
08:02Off the coast of Ecuador, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean,
08:07lie the Galapagos Islands, one of the most extraordinary places in the world.
08:12This archipelago is made up of 13 main islands and dozens of small islands and volcanic rocks that
08:18emerged from the ocean floor due to the activity of a hot spot beneath the Earth's crust.
08:24For millions of years, these islands have remained almost isolated from the rest of the world.
08:31Because of this long isolation, the animals and plants here had the chance to evolve in unique ways,
08:38leading to the emergence of some of the most unusual and fascinating species in the world.
08:44Here you can find giant tortoises that can live for more than a century,
08:49marine iguanas that can swim and forage underwater, and birds that are almost unafraid of humans.
08:57Observing these animals became an important part of the studies of the naturalist Charles Darwin
09:02when he visited the Galapagos in 1835.
09:07The differences among species on each island became an important part of the development of
09:12his ideas about evolution through natural selection.
09:16Today, the Galapagos is considered one of the best preserved ecosystems in the world.
09:23The volcanic landscapes, sandy beaches, dark waters, and seas teeming with life,
09:29give the archipelago the feeling of being a vast laboratory rather than just an ordinary place in our world.
09:37Tungurahua Volcano
09:38In the central part of Ecuador, near the city of Baños, you can find one of the most remarkable and
09:44active volcanoes in the country, Tungurahua. It stands over 5,000 meters tall and dominates the
09:51landscape of the entire region. This stratovolcano has experienced many eruptions throughout its history.
09:59The name Tungurahua comes from the Quechua language and is commonly translated as throat of fire,
10:06a fitting name for a volcano that has long shown intense activity.
10:13Since the late 1990s, Tungurahua entered a long period of activity that lasted for almost two decades.
10:21During this time, it emitted large clouds of ash, volcanic rocks, and lava flows that could be seen
10:29even from several kilometers away. At night, the volcanic eruptions give a reddish glow to the top of
10:36the mountain which stands out against the dark sky of the Andes. These eruptions also cause powerful
10:45landslides of volcanic materials that flow down its slopes.
10:51Laguna Cuicocha
10:53Within the Cotacachi Cayapas Ecological Reserve, you can find Laguna Cuicocha, a lake located inside
10:59the ancient crater of a volcano. This landscape was formed after a series of eruptions that caused the
11:06volcano to collapse, creating a large caldera that was later filled with water.
11:11One of the most remarkable features of the lagoon is the two small volcanic islands that can be seen
11:19in its center. These islands were not originally there. They were formed later due to new eruptions
11:25that occurred right inside the crater of the volcano. From the edge of the caldera, steep walls made of
11:33volcanic rock descend toward the lake. Because of this, an enclosed deep landscape was formed,
11:40where the dark water contrasts with the plants covering the slopes and the islands.
11:47It gives the impression that you are looking at a small and separate world formed from the volcano in
11:53the middle of the Andes Mountains. Cloud Forest of Mindo
11:58On the western side of the Ecuadorian Andes, you can find the vast cloud forest of Mindo. In this region,
12:05the moist air from the Pacific Ocean rises up the mountains and accumulates as an almost continuous
12:11mist. Because of this, it's as if the clouds and the plants in the forest blend together.
12:17Because of the constant high humidity, the forest has become very dense. The trees are covered with moss,
12:25ferns, and orchids that grow directly on the branches. Because of this kind of environment,
12:31Mindo has become one of the places in Ecuador with the greatest variety of animals and plants.
12:36In a relatively small area, more than 500 species of birds have been recorded,
12:42in addition to a great variety of butterflies, amphibians, and plants. The combination of high
12:49humidity, dense vegetation, and almost constant mist gives this forest an almost unbelievable
12:56appearance within the mountains of the Andes. Chimborazo, Chimborazo Volcano, in central Ecuador,
13:04stands Chimborazo Volcano, one of the largest and most remarkable mountains in the entire Andes.
13:10It has a height of approximately 6,263 meters, making it the highest mountain in Ecuador. For many centuries,
13:20centuries, it was considered one of the highest mountains known to man, before accurate knowledge
13:25about the height of the Himalayas was available. But Chimborazo has an even more surprising feature.
13:31Because the Earth is not a perfect sphere and the planet bulges slightly around Ecuador,
13:37the summit of Chimborazo is farther from the center of the Earth than the summit of any other mountain on
13:44the planet. This means that even though it is not the highest mountain when measured from sea
13:49level, the summit of Chimborazo is the farthest point on the surface of the Earth from the very
13:55center of the planet. In other words, anyone who reaches its summit is technically closer to outer
14:02space than anyone else on the surface of the Earth. The scenery of Chimborazo is also unique.
14:11Its slopes are covered with vast glaciers that stand out distinctly from the wide volcanic plains surrounding
14:17it. At such a high altitude, the air is very cold and dry, making the environment resemble a polar
14:26landscape more than a place near the equator where the equator is located. Because of its size, history,
14:33and unique location in the world, Chimborazo remains one of the most fascinating sights on the planet.
14:41Ecuador proves that you don't have to travel to the other side of the world
14:46to see landscapes that are completely different from each other. In a relatively small country,
14:52you can find huge volcanoes, the Amazon rainforest, lagoons, volcanic landscapes, cloud-covered forests,
15:00and one of the most unique archipelagos on Earth. Many of these places were formed by natural forces that are
15:08still at work today. There are active volcanoes, rivers that continue to shape the mountains,
15:14and ecosystems that have evolved over millions of years while being isolated from other parts of the
15:20world. The result is a country where, within just a few hours of travel, the scenery can change dramatically.
15:29It has so many sights and places that seem like they're from another planet. And now,
15:35tell us in the comments which of these places in Ecuador surprised or amazed you the most.
