07:11you're sitting in the radio tower.

07:14and fields of crops all over the island.
07:16You haven't stepped foot on the cruise ship
07:18for three years.
07:20Suddenly,
07:21you catch some signal on the radio in Morse code.
07:24Someone from the mainland
07:25is trying to contact you.
07:27You decide to get back on the ship
07:29and make your way there.
07:31It's one of the most intriguing locations in the world.
07:35Covered in darkness and miles underwater,
07:38this extreme environment
07:39is home to some unusual creatures and phenomena.
07:43It's called the Mariana Trench
07:45and it's the deepest oceanic trench on Earth.
07:48No wonder it's been so difficult to explore.
07:50Because of the risky conditions,
07:52people aren't able to explore this location
07:54without proper equipment.
07:56But what would happen
07:57if we threw a steel ball down there?
08:01Let's start with some basics.
08:03How did they first discover
08:04this enormously deep hole in the ocean?
08:07HMS Challenger identified it back in 1875.
08:10The ship had some pretty fancy
08:12sounding equipment for its time,
08:14but it wasn't nearly good enough
08:15to be able to fully explore the trench.
08:18Some decades later,
08:19in 1951,
08:21another ship,
08:22the HMS Challenger 2,
08:24came back to the location better equipped.
08:26The vessel featured an echo sounder
08:28and was able to take accurate measurements
08:30of what seemed to be the deepest point
08:32on the surface of our planet.
08:34If you were to look at it in 2D,
08:36you'd see the trench measures
08:381,500 miles in length
08:40and 43 miles in width on average.
08:42It also looks sort of like
08:44a crescent-shaped scar
08:45when you observe it from above.
08:47Nothing out of the ordinary so far, right?
08:50Well, if you were to stretch a wire
08:52from the surface of the ocean
08:54to the trench's deepest point,
08:55it would measure a staggering 7 miles.
08:58If we were able to physically move
09:00Mount Everest,
09:01which is the Earth's tallest mountain,
09:03to cover the Mariana Trench,
09:05it still wouldn't be enough,
09:06falling short by about a mile.
09:10Because the Mariana Trench is so deep,
09:12it's almost completely covered in darkness,
09:15as light can barely get through
09:17to such extreme distances underwater.
09:19The temperature isn't any friendlier either,
09:22just a few degrees above freezing.
09:24But the most dangerous feature of them all
09:26is the water pressure.
09:28Right at the deepest point of the trench,
09:30the amount of pressure is about
09:32a thousand times higher
09:33than the standard atmospheric pressure.
09:37Not a lot of people ever attempted
09:39to descend into the Mariana Trench.
09:41In fact, the first organized attempt
09:43took place more than 60 years ago.
09:46It was done by Jacques Piccard
09:48and Don Walsh in a submersible.
09:50They only spent about five hours on their descent
09:54and a mere 20 minutes at the bottom.
09:56Alas, they weren't able to take any pictures
09:59until these two scientists were able to descend.
10:02Specialists believed there was little to no chance
10:05that life could exist down there,
10:06given the conditions,
10:07most notably the extreme pressure.
10:10But while at the bottom,
10:11the submersible's floodlight
10:13caught sight of a creature.
10:15It was a very flat one indeed.
10:18As you can imagine,
10:20resources here are very scarce.
10:22What kind of creatures live down here?
10:24And how do they survive,
10:26given the harsh environment?
10:27Surprisingly, there is quite an abundance of wildlife
10:30living in the Mariana Trench.
10:32Some of these creatures fall back on chemicals to survive,
10:36like methane or sulfur,
10:37while other kinds of fish nibble at the marine life
10:40that's, well, weaker than them on the food chain.
10:43The most common creatures found here
10:45are xenophilophores,
10:47amphipods,
10:48and small sea cucumbers.
10:51Some of them adapted by hardening up their shell
10:54using alumina harnessed from the seawater.
10:57Smaller creatures, like microbes,
10:59adapted by feeding on the chemicals emitted
11:02when the seawater hits the underwater rocks.
11:04They consider the Mariana snailfish
11:07the rock star of the area in terms of wildlife.
11:10They're small,
11:11ranging from three to nine inches,
11:13translucent,
11:14and lacking any scales.
11:15But they're the top beast of prey in the area.
11:20It's no wonder some people started to believe
11:22that the ancient Megalodon might still be living here.
11:25What was a Megalodon, you might be wondering?
11:27It was the largest predator ever known in our planet's history.
11:31Basically, the biggest and nastiest shark ever to have lived.
11:35Scientists believe it's been extinct for quite some time,
11:38and the idea that it might still be hiding in the Mariana Trench
11:41doesn't have a lot of supporting information.
11:44The Megalodon would have needed to learn
11:45to navigate in complete darkness.
11:48It would either have to be bioluminescent
11:50or evolve to have massive eyes.
11:52More so, because of its school bus-like size,
11:55the Megalodon would have needed a lot to eat.
11:58Microbes and small snailfish
12:00just wouldn't have done the trick.
12:03If a steel ball were to be dropped in the trench,
12:05what would be its effect on it?
12:07Would the ball be strong enough to sustain such pressure?
12:10Let's look at the science here.
12:13If we assume it's a solid steel ball,
12:15the pressure found at the bottom of the trench
12:17wouldn't be enough to really affect it
12:19and cause permanent damage.
12:21It would take it a solid 12 minutes
12:23to reach the bottom of the ocean, though.
12:26What about the temperature?
12:28Well, it turns out that the difference in temperature
12:31on the surface and at the bottom of the trench
12:33is quite impressive,
12:34a difference of about 86 degrees Fahrenheit.
12:38So, it would cause the ball to shrink a bit.
12:41But yet again, once the ball returns to the surface,
12:44it would simply come back to normal.
12:47Should the ball get stuck there?
12:49There's another interesting question to answer.
12:51Would corrosion affect it?
12:53Corrosion of steel is highly dependent
12:55on the amount of oxygen in the water.
12:57The amount of oxygen dissolved in water
12:59remains constant at depths greater than 3 miles.
13:02I'll spare you the math,
13:04but it would take more than 10,000 years
13:06for the steel ball to completely rust under the sea.
13:11I can't help but wonder, though,
13:13what would it take us humans
13:15to be able to survive at such extreme depths?
13:17Let's look at what was used in the past
13:20to explore this mysterious location.
13:22A little thing called syntactic foam.
13:25Why?
13:25Because it's the only material
13:27that can both float and resist
13:29the amount of pressure found here.
13:31Without this sort of protection,
13:32our lungs would rapidly collapse here.
13:35More so, the pressure from the water
13:37would push liquid into our mouths,
13:39replacing the much-needed oxygen with water.
13:44Then, there would be the much-needed ability
13:46to be able to come back to the surface
13:48should anything not go as planned.
13:52One of the vessels that went for a deep dive here
13:54had 1,000-pound steel weights attached to it
13:58so it would ensure its sinkage.
13:59These weights were connected to the ship
14:01by a special type of wire
14:03that had an increased corroding time
14:05of 11 to 13 hours in seawater,
14:07just in case something went wrong down there
14:09and they'd have to bounce back faster.
14:13Given the harsh conditions here,
14:15the problem of oxygen supply
14:17is really important, too.
14:18Any vessel looking to descend
14:20into the Mariana Trench again
14:22would need to consider some sort of device
14:24that can recycle the air
14:25in order to reduce the amount of oxygen
14:28that needs to be transported down there.
14:31And the last, but definitely not the least
14:33of all problems, would be electricity.
14:35There surely isn't a power socket down there
14:38for you to charge your phone.
14:39So, there needs to be enough battery life
14:42to support all the necessary equipment,
14:44communication, oxygen supply,
14:46lighting devices, and so on.
14:49None of these problems
14:50seem to be quite the challenge anymore
14:52since, as of recently,
14:54you can buy a tour of the Mariana Trench.
14:57Three lucky individuals
14:58were part of such a project back in 2020.
15:01They were submerged
15:03in a 3.5-inch thick titanium sphere.
15:06This ensured that they didn't feel
15:07any pressure changes
15:08and physiological stresses whatsoever.
15:11Each of the guests took part
15:13in an individual trip
15:14that had an estimated length
15:15of about 14 hours.
15:17The descent itself took over 4 hours.
15:20Once they reached the bottom,
15:21they got the chance to witness
15:23some of the most extraordinary creatures
15:25on the planet.
15:26Then it was time to start
15:27the 4-hour ascent back to the surface.
15:30You've finally done it!
15:31You've created a simulator
