00:15For weeks, these city workers have been pulling out heaps of garbage trapped under the pavement.
00:23City leaders say they have marked over 200 places, most at risk of flooding.
00:28As you know, part of the reasons we've had flooding in the past has been cases of drainage system,
00:35the waterways, the pathways that have been blocked or clogged.
00:38So we have a subcommittee that has focused on ensuring that we clear and clean up the drainage systems.
00:47We're able to repair some of the choke points that we have identified.
00:51People in Nairobi's outskirts still remember how bad past floods were.
00:58Floods have disorganized us for far too long.
01:00But this time round, we have witnessed the government fixing the drainage systems.
01:04And we're hopeful that our house will not flood when El Nino hits.
01:07For small-scale traders like Joseph Gikundi, tracking weather forecasts isn't an option when daily survival comes first.
01:16But just like millions of urban vendors across Kenya, he has prepared as best as he can, keeping one eye
01:23on his customers and the other on the darkening skies.
01:26We have just put ourselves in a situation that we have to lift our things so that when it rains,
01:36when the water enters in the shop, we can be settled somehow.
01:42Beyond clearing garbage, authorities are constructing new sewer lines and dedicated water channels.
01:50The channels are specifically designed to divert dangerous flood waters away from residential areas.
01:57Authorities in Kenya are hopeful that early efforts like this will help save lives and livelihoods before the rains begin.
