00:11Imagine walking into a room and saying, clean the table, put the dishes away, and bring me a
00:16glass of water. No remote control, no programming, no step-by-step instructions. The robot simply
00:22understands what you said, looks at the environment, figures out what needs to happen,
00:26and does it. That may sound like science fiction, but one Chinese AI robotics company says this kind
00:34of breakthrough could arrive as early as 2027. And if it does, it could represent a moment for
00:40robots similar to what ChatGPT was for AI. When ChatGPT appeared, something changed. Computers
00:47didn't suddenly become conscious, but for millions of people, AI became incredibly easy to use.
00:53You didn't need to learn programming. You could simply talk to it, ask a question,
00:57give it an instruction, and get something useful back.
01:01Hey, could you brew me a strong espresso with oat milk, please?
01:10Humanoid robotics is chasing a similar breakthrough, but there's one enormous difference. ChatGPT lives
01:17inside a computer. A humanoid robot has to deal with the real world. It has to see objects,
01:23understand where they are, move its body, control its hands, apply the right amount of force,
01:28and react when something doesn't go according to plan. This is the idea behind embodied AI,
01:34artificial intelligence that doesn't just generate information, but takes physical action.
01:39One company pushing this idea is China's Spirit AI. The startup says it is working toward a more
01:45general purpose robotic brain. Its goal is to connect three things, vision, language, and action. In other
01:53words, the robot doesn't just hear, pick up that box. It has to understand what that box means, locate it,
02:00plan the movement, reach for it, grasp it, and place it somewhere appropriate. Spirit AI says its robots
02:06are already being used in industrial environments, including production operations involving CatL and
02:11JD.com. The company says its robots can achieve around 90% success on simple tasks in structured
02:18environments. But here's where the story gets interesting. Spirit AI is targeting a major breakthrough
02:25in its robot intelligence by mid-2027. The idea is that people could give robots natural language
02:32instructions, and the robots could perform sequences of physical tasks rather than one narrowly programmed
02:38movement. But how do you teach a robot to deal with the messy physical world? That's one of the biggest
02:44problems in robotics. An AI model can learn from enormous amounts of text and images. But a robot needs
02:51something different. It needs to learn things like, how hard should I grip this object? What happens if the
02:57object moves? How do I pick up something flexible? What if an object isn't exactly where I expected?
03:04Spirit AI says it is collecting large amounts of real-world interaction data to train its models.
03:10Because the real world doesn't behave like a video game. A table can be cluttered. A cable can bend.
03:16A box can be in the wrong place. A human can suddenly walk in front of you. For a robot,
03:22every one of those
03:23situations becomes an intelligence problem. And this is where we need to separate the hype from reality.
03:29The first major breakthrough may not happen in your living room. It could happen in a factory. A factory
03:35can be controlled. The environment is predictable. The objects are known. The task is repeated thousands
03:41of times. Your home? Not so much. There could be toys on the floor. Different types of furniture. Pets.
03:48Children. Hundreds of objects the robot has never seen before. That's why household robotics remains
03:53much harder than industrial applications. So what would a chat GPT moment actually mean for
04:00humanoid robots? It probably wouldn't mean that robots suddenly become human. It would mean something
04:06much simpler. You buy a robot, take it out of the box, and instead of programming it, you simply tell
04:12it what you want. Please take these tools and place them in the box. Put the large wrench in first,
04:18then the containers. Let me know when you are finished. Put these packages by the door. Load the
04:26dishwasher. Move those boxes over there. Help me organize this room. And instead of requiring a
04:32specialist to program every movement, the robot figures out how to accomplish the goal. That's the
04:37fundamental shift. From programming robots to instructing robots. But there's an important reality check.
04:442027 isn't a guaranteed deadline. It's a target. Robotics still faces enormous challenges involving
04:51reliability, dexterity, data, safety, and unpredictable environments. But if Spirit AI and other robotics
04:58companies can solve the intelligence problem, the impact could be enormous. Because the first wave of
05:04AI transformed what happens on our screens. The next wave could transform what happens around us.
05:10AI that doesn't just write. AI that doesn't just see. AI that doesn't just talk. AI that acts. And that
05:17may be the real beginning of the humanoid robot era. What would you ask a humanoid robot to do first?
