We’ve got our hands on the Arctic Trucks Toyota Hilux AT37, and it’s going up against a super rare, one-of-one Hilux… It’s the Top Gear Polar Special Hilux - the same one that the original Top Gear team drove to the North Pole!
The two are going head-to-head over a series of challenges on an off-road course to see which of the two is the best off-road! But how will they compare? Let’s take a closer look at the stats.
The AT37 is based on the current-generation Hilux, so it comes with a 2.8-litre 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine that produces 204hp and 500Nm. Power is sent to all four wheels via a 6-speed auto, and it weighs 2,200kg. It comes with several modifications, including 37” all-terrain tyres, upgraded front & rear differentials, as well as an adjustable performance suspension system. All in, the car and the upgrades cost £78,000.
Then we come to the Top Gear special edition Hilux. It’s based on the 2006 generation and is powered by a 3-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine that produces 171hp and 360Nm. It has 4WD, ultra-low gearing, and 38” snow tyres. It also comes with pneumatic locking differentials and a couple of additional unique mods!

00:27On Colin's YouTube channel, he's built all sorts of crazy vehicles, including a jet-powered bike,
00:32a BMW with a built-in hot tub, and the world's fastest bumper car.
00:36He's also no stranger to doing weird things in a Toyota Hilux.
00:39But this particular vehicle is very special.
00:41It's the actual truck that Arctic Trucks built for Top Gear to drive to the North Pole.
00:45It's based on a standard 2006 Hilux with a 3-litre 4-cylinder turbo diesel
00:50with 171 horsepower and 360 newton-metres of torque.
00:54It drives all four wheels through a five-speed automatic gearbox with special ultra-load gearing.
00:59It also has giant 38-inch tall snow tyres, pneumatic locking differentials,
01:03and a few unique modifications.
01:05There's a gun rack, a removable toilet seat, and a sat-nav with a few embarrassing secrets.
01:11All in, this very special Hilux weighs about 2.1 tonnes and is basically tricelastic.
01:15This brand-new Arctic Trucks Hilux AT37 has a 2.8-litre 4-cylinder turbo diesel

05:19balance like aggression speed maneuverability and not like bounce into the car yeah so no pressure

10:17will test each truck's actual articulation the more suspension travel they have the more traction
10:22each tire can gain on the muddy ground so we'll be more controlled and able to drive slower both
10:26trucks have modified lifted suspension but our giant tires give us slightly more ground clearance than
10:31sam's hilux but despite this he was still as cocky as ever i feel guilty doing this graham
10:36i really like that truck you know but you know needs must look at that walk and it's really good
10:49but this is where we'll be doing well with our locking disc but that wasn't spinning its back

17:35rock crawl through the water for this challenge we'll have to drive through the mud and up a
17:39series of increasingly difficult rocky climbs these will test our approach angles and how much grip we
17:44get from the tires and locking diffs we'll take turns attempting each of the two hills and if
17:48either the truck gets stuck at any point and can't free itself it'll get zero points right we've got
17:53to be an owl for this isn't we so l diff locks the log

21:03run! No, let's not talk about the first one! The first one we didn't even have our diff locks
21:06on! Irrelevant! What happened to us on the second run? Hesitation! Oh Colin! This means
21:12it's two points to the new Hilux and one to the old one, which means that overall the
21:15scores are 10 to Sam and 8 to Colin and me, with just a single challenge remaining! This
21:20means the best we can hope for is a draw, but I had a plan!

21:29takes all on the next challenge! I will agree if you go first! Yeah we'll do that, we'll
21:34take that! And the last challenge is a big one! We'd be driving up one of the steepest
21:38hills in the quarry with plenty of loose rocks and deep muddy ruts, but that's not all! Sam,
21:43listen we've got an extra dimension to this, whoever loses this has to go for a tour of the
21:48course on the inbuilt toilet! How do we win this? I don't know, we're just going to do it! Graeme
