00:00all right guys welcome back to grow the earth and today i'm going to show you
00:05some of the things as to why your plants may not be growing we uh we redid our garden and
00:14as you can see we've straightened it out a little bit we have increased the area between
00:21the rows and we've actually put down this black plastic that you can see here to try to control
00:28the weeds and control the grass and so forth we did this for kind of past sins that we paid
00:35we did
00:36by uh using a tiller inside of our garden beds because originally when these were built
00:44we had a layer of cardboard underneath that originally you had the saint augustine grass
00:49underneath and it killed it almost immediately and then we had of course our grass between our
00:55roads that was very narrow because we were trying to extract the maximum amount of garden space out
01:02of this area and whenever i ended up tilling the ground it basically brought all that dead grass
01:12back up to the surface i started to have to deal with grass and an extreme amount of it to
01:17the fact
01:17to where i was actually going through and digging out entire beds and pulling grass and grass seed and
01:23grass roots out of our beds just so i could plant and not have it overrun before the end of
01:29the season
01:31so we finally came through and i was like all right it's just time to do it because as you
01:35can see here
01:37we got this pretty little girl now and she needed her own space to be able to get out here
01:41in the garden
01:41with us and it was just the perfect place to let her have her area you know uh being able
01:47to
01:48get out here move around and so forth instead of being in the house all the time so we did
01:55this in
01:56order to give her her space in order to let us redo our garden in order to let us start
02:01over
02:02with our garden beds to remove all that dirt remove all that grass and just start over fresh
02:10now here is where the problem came in we rebuilt our beds we bought brought in all of this garden
02:18soil
02:21and almost immediately we started to notice that nothing wanted to really grow
02:28now as you can see here this is a tomato that we planted by seed and this has probably been
02:32in the
02:33ground for two to three months and that's as big as it's gotten it pretty much sprouted and it has
02:41stalled out and that's as big as it has gotten and that's pretty much the story for the entire
02:47garden that we've had and more so that it would get to this stage and then it would just simply
02:53die
02:54this tomato plant was planted in the ground we had actually grown it from seed inside of our greenhouse
02:59and as you can see it is pretty unremarkable now in that time i've we've kind of i've kind of
03:09formulated ideas what was going on and as you can see here we've got a couple of cucumbers and stuff
03:16that have finally perked up and are actually growing now now originally i thought the problem was
03:24is that we didn't put enough uh fertilizer in the soil and that was what was causing the issue so
03:33to
03:33fix that i got one of these little sprayers that actually you can meter the amount of concentrate to
03:42water and i bought some of this liquid high nitrogen fertilizer now initially this helped it kept the plants
03:50that were in our in our garden alive but it wasn't making them grow and we were still having this
03:57issue that everything we planted it just it would sprout it would look beautiful and then it would just
04:03slowly kind of wilt and die and i finally understood what the problem was because in a garden especially if
04:13you're going to be organic gardening if you're using organic fertilizer what needs to happen and what
04:21needs to be there for that organic fertilizer to be available to your plants is you have to have microbes
04:29and bacteria that break down that fertilizer in order to make it bioavailable to the plants without
04:37those microbes in it without those bacteria you run into an issue so what i finally figured out is is
04:45that
04:46this new soil hasn't had time it obviously was fairly new that it hadn't had time or it didn't have
04:52enough compost in it to replicate and duplicate these microbes and bacteria and so our soil wasn't being
05:02fed with the fertilizer that we put in because it couldn't break it down and it couldn't make it
05:06available to the to the plants so that's where i found this product which is basically a liquid compost
05:13and using the same uh spray bottle that has that dispenser in it i was able to put this in
05:21and spray
05:21it on the gardens on the garden soil itself because that's where this needs to go because this has a
05:27lot of the bacteria and the funguses and all that stuff that your soil needs in order to break down
05:34the material and also to break down or organic fertilizers so after spraying this on we finally
05:43got some progress in our garden now unfortunately this is probably too little too late and this is
05:49probably going to be primed and ready for our fall garden but we're still kind of we're struggling in
05:56certain areas because you have these plants have been stalled out for months and months
06:00and now they are trying to catch up and be you know be productive luckily
06:10our our median cucumber here is being very productive this is the first one of the season
06:18because unfortunately we got started really late in redoing our garden but as you can see
06:26we're actually getting something out of our garden we've got some okra over there that we're getting
06:29okra off of and all that nice stuff so guys if your garden is having an issue we need to
06:36get down to
06:36the root causes why that's happening and if you work through it and you work hard and you figure it
06:42out
