Cape Town's plan to cage baboons sparks outcry

Plans by city authorities in Cape Town, South Africa, to permanently cage around 60 Chacma baboons has triggered a bitter dispute over whether wildlife that has adapted to city life should be confined, culled or allowed to coexist with residents. The move, presented as an alternative to culling in the baboons in Simon's Town district, has drawn fierce opposition from some residents and conservationists who say confining wild baboons sets a dangerous precedent.

Chacma baboons are southern Africa's largest monkey species. They are highly adaptable and have increasingly come into conflict with people as cities expand.

At a protest outside the planned enclosure site, demonstrators waved placards declaring Cape Town the "City of Chacma Torture" and carried makeshift cages containing stuffed baboon toys. City officials argue the welfare of the animals has already been compromised by their dependence on urban areas.

Animal welfare groups and activists say the root problem is urban encroachment rather than baboon behavior, and argue residents should do more to secure properties and remove food sources.

00:40Oh, my God.
00:46Morning, Eileen. What are you doing this morning? You've got a full tummy because you went
00:53into my house. Morning, CJ. You know, I just feel like you could live in harmony with the
01:00baboons. There's no ways that we need to separate them in any way. They're not dangerous.
01:07They treat you as you treat them. If you treat them with anger and force,
01:15they come back at you with force. If you treat them like a pet, like a cat or a dog,
01:22like I treat them, then we live together in harmony.
01:26Falling poop.
01:31No, happy either.
01:57No, happy either.
01:58No, happy not.
02:13I'm not sure how to cry, but no day.
02:15Get off my head.
02:15Eileen.
02:21As you told me, I'm not sure how to wear them.
02:23I'm not sure how to wear a mask.
02:24It's all over them.
02:25You're not sure how to wear them.
02:26You know, I'm good for a set of clothes.
02:26This is a great question.
02:52And we were turning what was kind of like an unused
02:56old data from...
03:36I'll see you next time.
