Replica of Louis XIV warship under construction in northern France
For the past twenty years or so in the Nord region, a handful of craftsmen and volunteers have been building a full-scale replica of a large warship from Louis XIV’s navy. “The appeal of the project is, of course, to build the Jean-Bart and one day see it afloat in the port of Gravelines – that much is certain. But the real appeal of the site lies above all in coming to discover how the ship is being built using traditional crafts, such as blacksmithing or ship carpentry,” emphasizes Jean Edouard Cardin, the project director.
