A single spoon can make a real difference for chili plants that are short on magnesium, helping support stronger flowering and fruiting when the signs are right. The key is knowing what to look for: older lower leaves turning yellow between the veins while the veins stay green, not confusing it with nitrogen hunger or iron shortage.
The old gardener’s fix here is Epsom salt, mixed carefully and used only when a plant truly needs it. The advice is practical and honest, with clear warnings about overfeeding, salt buildup, watering at the base, and why heat stress or poor pollination are often the real reason chili flowers drop.
If you grow chili peppers in pots, container gardens, or fruiting vegetables, this gardening tip video breaks down when Epsom salt can help and when it won’t. It is useful for organic gardening, pepper plant care, and anyone searching for chili plants, flowering peppers, magnesium deficiency, Epsom salt for plants, and simple garden remedies.

00:00Two chili plants, side by side, same pot, same soil, same water, same sun.
00:07One is covered in flowers and fruit, the other stands there green and healthy looking
00:12and gives you almost nothing, flowers dropping off before they ever set, fruit stalling halfway.
00:19Same everything, and yet not the same at all.
00:23What is the one plant missing that the other is not?
00:27Today I am going to tell you, and I am going to give you an old one-spoon kitchen-covered
00:33fix that the old gardeners used for generations, but I am also going to be straight with you,
00:40more than most will, about when that spoon actually helps and when it does nothing at all,
00:46and how to tell which is your case so you do not go dosing a plant for a trouble it
00:52has
00:52not got.
00:53Stay with me, for this is as much about reading your plant as about the fix.
00:59I am Elias, and this is one of those true old remedies that works a treat when it is the
01:05right answer, and does not a thing when it is not, so the whole art of it is knowing which.
01:11So let me give you both, the fix and the knowing.
01:15Quick word before I go further.
01:18The old methods my family uses, there is more of it than fits in any one video.
01:24I gathered the whole of it into a book at EliasYoder.com.
01:29The book is the long version.
01:31If you want it, it is there.
01:33I will not mention it again.
01:35I learned to read a plant's leaves from my grandmother before I ever learned the names
01:41of anything.
01:42She could walk down a row and tell you which plant was hungry and for what, just by the
01:48color and pattern of the yellowing, the way a doctor reads a face.
01:52The plant is always telling you what it wants, Elias, she would say.
01:57Most folk just never learned its language.
01:59She was right, and that reading is worth more than any remedy, for a remedy given blind is
02:06half a waste.
02:07So let me teach you both her reading and the fix it points to.
02:12First, the fix itself, plainly, and it is Epsom salt, that plain white salt from the cupboard
02:19folk keep for a sore foot soak.
02:22Old gardeners have used it on their plants for generations, and here is what it is.
02:27Magnesium and sulfur, two things a plant does need, only in small amounts, not the big feeding
02:35minerals, but two lesser ones that matter all the same.
02:39And of the two, it is the magnesium that does the main work here.
02:44Now here is why magnesium matters so, and this is the first thing to understand.
02:50Magnesium sits at the very heart of the green in a leaf, the green stuff that lets a plant
02:56catch the sunlight and turn it into food and sugar.
02:59No magnesium, no green, and no green, no catching the sun, so the plant cannot feed itself well,
03:07and everything slows.
03:09The flowering and the fruiting first of all.
03:12So a plant short on magnesium is a plant that cannot quite make enough food to push out flower
03:19after flower, and fruit after fruit, and it stalls, just as yours did.
03:25Now the second thing, and it is the most useful in the whole video, how to know a magnesium
03:31shortage when you see it, for it shows a plain sign.
03:35When a plant runs short on magnesium, its older, lower leaves go yellow between the veins,
03:41while the veins themselves stay green, a yellow leaf webbed over with a green net of veins.
03:48And mark that it is the old lower leaves first, not the young top ones.
03:54Why the old ones?
03:55Because the plant, being short, robs its own old leaves of magnesium to feed the new growth,
04:03so the old leaves yellow first as they are drained.
04:06So that is your sign, yellowing between the veins on the lower, older leaves, veins still
04:13green.
04:14See that on your chili, and magnesium may well be your answer.
04:19But here is the third thing, and it is where folk go wrong, for two other troubles look almost
04:25the same and want a different answer entirely, so you must tell them apart.
04:30If the whole leaf pales, evenly, veins and all, and it is the older leaves, that is not magnesium,
04:38that is nitrogen hunger, a different want.
04:41And if you see that same between the veins yellowing, but up on the youngest top leaves instead
04:47of the old bottom ones, that is not magnesium either, that is more likely an iron shortage.
04:54So the rule to carry, magnesium yellows between the veins of the old lower leaves, iron between
05:02the veins of the young top leaves, and nitrogen pales the whole old leaf evenly.
05:09Read which it is before you treat, and you will not waste your time dosing for the wrong
05:14thing.
05:16Now the fourth thing, why would one pot run short of magnesium, and the one right beside
05:22it not, same soil and all?
05:25Here is the honest answer, and it points to who needs this most.
05:30Most garden soil in the open ground has magnesium enough for ordinary growth, so this is far less
05:38a trouble in the open beds.
05:39It is the pots where it bites, for every time you water a pot, a little of the magnesium washes
05:46out the drainage holes with the water, and over a season of heavy watering, a pot can slowly
05:53run low where the open ground never would.
05:56So this is chiefly a container gardener's trouble, and it shows up most in the heat of heavy flowering
06:03and fruiting, when the plant is drawing hardest on everything.
06:07So the two plants differed not because one was better, but because one pot simply reached
06:14its limits sooner.
06:15And here is the deeper, honest fix behind the spoon, that a pot filled with good, rich
06:22compost and old manure holds and slowly gives back far more of these lesser minerals than
06:30a poor, thin, bought mix does.
06:32So the richer you make your pots soil to begin with, the less you will ever need the spoon
06:38at all.
06:40The Epsom salt patches a shortage, but a rich, living soil keeps the shortage from coming
06:46in the first place.
06:48Now the fifth thing, the making and giving of it, and the measure matters.
06:53You take one level spoon of the Epsom salt to a gallon of water, and here is a point not
07:00to skip.
07:01Dissolve it fully, stir it till the water runs clear and no gritty crystals remain, for undissolved
07:10crystals give the roots an uneven, too strong dose in one spot.
07:16Then, you pour it slow around the base of the plant, at the roots, not on the leaves, and
07:22let the soil drink it in.
07:24I like to do it early of a morning, while the ground is still cool.
07:29And you do this only once every three or four weeks, and only during the flowering and fruiting
07:36time, not before.
07:38That is the whole dose.
07:40And, if a plant is showing that yellowing bad, and you want it helped quicker, there
07:45is an old trick.
07:47You can take that same dissolved Epsom water, weaker, and spray it lightly on the leaves of
07:53an evening, for a leaf can drink in a little magnesium straight through itself faster than
07:59the roots can pull it up, giving the plant a quicker mend, while the soil watering does
08:05the lasting work.
08:06Just spray it weak and in the cool of evening, never in hot sun on a wet leaf.
08:13But the base watering is the main way, the leaf spray only a quick helper for a bad case.
08:20Now the sixth thing, and hear me well, more is not better, it is worse.
08:27Folk think if one spoon helps, two will help double, and it is not so.
08:32For Epsom salt is still a salt, and too much of it builds up in the soil and turns from
08:39helping to harming, salting the ground against the very plant.
08:43So, one level spoon, no more, and only every few weeks.
08:49With a salt, restraint is the whole safety of it.
08:53Do not overdo it.
08:56Now the seventh thing, and this is me being straighter with you than the title was, for
09:01I'll not sell you a miracle.
09:03Epsom salt is not a fertilizer.
09:06It has none of the three big feeding minerals a chili truly lives on.
09:11No nitrogen, no phosphorus, no potash.
09:15So it will not feed a starving plant.
09:19It will not fix a plant sitting in poor soil.
09:22It will not save one that is under watered or short of sun.
09:26It only helps in the one case where the plant is genuinely short of magnesium, and then it
09:33helps that one thing.
09:35Use it for that, and it earns its place.
09:38Expect it to do everything, and it will disappoint you.
09:42That is the honest scope of it.
09:44And the eighth thing, the honest correction to the whole premise.
09:48For your chili flowers dropping and fruit not setting is very often not a magnesium trouble
09:55at all.
09:56The chili and the pepper are touchy about heat, and when the days climb up above 90 degrees
10:02and stay there, the plant simply drops its flowers.
10:05They will not set in that fierce heat, no matter how you feed it, and it waits for cooler weather
10:11to set again.
10:13That is the commonest cause of chili flower drop there is, and no spoon of anything fixes
10:18it.
10:19Only a bit of afternoon shade in a heat wave, and patience.
10:23And the other common cause is poor pollination.
10:27Too few bees to carry the pollen, which the living garden of flowers cures.
10:32So before you reach for the epsom salt for dropped flowers, ask first, is it just the heat,
10:38or the bees?
10:40Often it is, and the salt was never the answer.
10:44Now the ninth thing, when not to use it at all, which is as important as when to.
10:51If your chili's leaves are all a good even green, and it is flowering and fruiting along
10:57just fine, do not give it epsom salt, for you would be curing a shortage it does not
11:03have, and only risking that salt buildup for no gain.
11:07A remedy for a trouble you do not have is not a remedy, it is just a risk.
11:14So use it only when you see that true sign and have ruled out the heat and the rest.
11:19When in doubt, do nothing and watch.
11:24And the tenth thing, never let this little fix pull your eye from the true foundation,
11:30for that is where the real health is.
11:33No spoon of epsom salt makes up for the basics, a steady even watering, a rich living soil fed
11:40with compost and old manure, good drainage so the roots do not drown, and plenty of full sun.
11:48Those are what truly grow you a chili loaded with fruit, and this magnesium spoon is only
11:54a small helper at the edges for the one particular want, atop that good foundation.
11:59Get the foundation right first, always, and reach for the spoon only for that one specific shortage.
12:08Now let me say a small plain word, not a who-profits sermon, for a spoon of salt is no
12:15one's scheme.
12:16But notice the shape of it. The garden center's answer to a stalling plant is always the same.
12:23Buy a stronger fertilizer, use more of it, and more again, throwing money and minerals
12:29at a plant that was maybe short of just one small thing, or maybe only too hot.
12:35And here the old way says the opposite. Stop, look at the plant, read what it is actually telling you,
12:43and give it the one small thing it wants, which may cost a spoonful or nothing at all.
12:49There is a whole trade built on selling folk more and stronger feed for troubles that wanted only a closer
12:56look.
12:58So folk come to think a struggling plant needs something bought and poured on when it needs
13:03a gardener who stops and reads it. That reading, that knowing what a plant truly lacks before you
13:10treat it, is worth more than any bag or bottle or spoon. So there is the whole honest truth of
13:18the
13:18one spoon chili trick. Epsom salt gives magnesium, which a plant needs for the green in its leaves and
13:25for steady fruiting. Know the sign, yellowing between the veins of the old lower leaves and tell it from
13:32the nitrogen pale and the iron yellowing up top. Know it is mainly a pot grower's trouble, from the
13:39watering washing it out. Give one level spoon well dissolved in a gallon of water, at the base,
13:46once every few weeks in the fruiting time, and never more, for it is a salt.
13:52Know that it is no fertilizer and no miracle, and that dropped flowers are more often just the heat
13:59or the bees. Do not use it on a plant that is already green and fruiting fine, and never let
14:06it stand in
14:07for the true foundation of water and soil and sun. Do that, and you will use this old remedy the
14:14way the
14:15wise old gardeners did, for the one thing it is good for, and be glad of it.
14:21Now I want to hear from you. Tell me down below whether you have seen that between the veins
14:26yellowing on your own plants, and whether you had ever been told the difference between the magnesium,
14:31the iron, and the nitrogen signs, for that one bit of reading saves folk a deal of wasted worry.
14:38And tell me your county, and how hot your summers run, for if your chilies drop their flowers in the
14:44heat,
14:45that is likely your true trouble, not the soil. I read every one. Next time I want to show you
14:52the
14:52feeding of your plants the old way through the whole season, the compost teas, and the manure teas,
14:58and how to read what a plant is asking for at each stage, so you feed it what it truly
15:03wants when it
15:04wants it, and never guess again. The old gardeners did not answer every trouble by buying a stronger
15:11bottle. They answered it by looking, by reading the plant close, and knowing the plain signs it gave,
15:17and then giving it the one small thing it lacked, often from the kitchen cupboard, often for nothing.
15:22There is a quiet wisdom in that, in curing the true want rather than dosing a plant blind,
15:29in knowing a living thing well enough to hear what it is asking. The people who built this country with
15:35their hands knew that, and we are only just starting to remember it.
15:38And that is the purpose of the plant. It is just a good place between the plants,
