The ABC can reveal only a dozen people in South Australia are trained to conduct forensic examinations for victim-survivors of sexual assault. The government’s looking to midwives to help grow that number, giving them the option to opt in to training.

00:02Each year, hundreds of sexual assault survivors are tested in South Australia,
00:07collecting critical evidence in holding perpetrators to account.
00:10Having to do these examinations and be put in, again, a very vulnerable state,
00:16while you're potentially still sort of facing the impacts of trauma,
00:22it's a really heavy examination to go through.
00:25But with only a handful of people trained to do the testing,
00:28the government's now promising to offer 40 hours of training to midwives.
00:33We need more of you, but there's also a government that has a high degree of confidence
00:38and trust in your skills, and we know you are the right people to be doing this.
00:43The reform off the back of SA's Royal Commission into domestic, family and sexual violence,
00:47which highlighted long wait times for people in regional areas.
00:51Sometimes victim survivors were having to travel to Adelaide to have these examinations conducted.
00:57SA Health says there are currently 12 trained staff, three in regional areas and nine in Adelaide,
01:02who can conduct frenzy examinations for sexual assaults.
01:05It's a number the peak body for domestic and sexual violence says needs to be much higher.
01:10This is a really important step in improving wellbeing and justice outcomes,
01:14but we need to monitor that these reforms are having the intended impact.
01:18But advocates say more education's also needed to help break the stigma involved in testing.
01:23I believe that as people, we're not really educated on what a lot of these processes sort of look like
01:29in practice.
