00:00Mr. Castro was arrested by the BCA yesterday in Minneapolis.
00:05He was booked into the Hennepin County Jail and remained there overnight
00:09before having his first appearance in state court a short time ago.
00:13The process of holding Mr. Castro accountable for his firing a weapon through the front door,
00:19striking Julio Sosa Solis, endangering the lives of others, and lying to law enforcement has begun.
00:25Despite the best efforts of the Texas governor to ignore both the United States Constitution
00:31and crystal clear Supreme Court precedent, here we are.
00:36At Mr. Castro's first appearance, our team argued for $350,000 bail with conditions.
00:43The judge expressed concern about Mr. Castro's lack of ties to Minnesota,
00:48that the potential criminal penalty created a motive to flee because it is presumptive prison,
00:55and his expressed interest in fleeing to Mexico.
00:59Bail was set at $400,000 without conditions or $200,000 with conditions.
01:06Mr. Castro invented a story to justify shooting through a front door into a house with multiple people in it.
01:13The bullet he fired lodged in the wall of a child's bedroom.
01:18He accused Mr. Sosa Solis and Mr. Aljorna of attacking him with a broom and a shovel.
01:24As a result, both men were charged in federal court.
01:29Their lives were upended, along with the lives of their families.
01:33They were tagged by the federal government as gang members without any proof whatsoever,
01:38and they were threatened with deportation.
01:41Fortunately, a video captured the incident, and it was clear that Castro's claims were false.
01:46The U.S. Attorney's Office was forced to dismiss the cases against both men.
01:51The Hennepin County Attorney's Office charged Mr. Castro on May 29th with four counts of assault with a dangerous weapon
01:59and falsely reporting a crime.
02:01His appearance in a Hennepin County courtroom today is a critical step in our efforts to hold him accountable for
02:08that shooting.
02:08It never should have taken this long, and I share Minnesotan's frustration that it did.
02:16I never should have had to file a lawsuit to compel Texas to extradite Castro.
02:22There should never have been any question whether he'd have his day in court here.
02:26But instead of following the law, Governor Abbott chose to turn Texas into a sanctuary state for somebody accused of
02:33a violent crime.
02:35He tried to stay in the way of justice, and now that Mr. Castro has had his first appearance and
02:41is facing his charges,
02:44it is clear that the effort to stand in the way of justice has been unsuccessful.
