00:00Nine victims with no direct links between them except for their gender.
00:05South Africans have reacted in shock to a series of ongoing femicides over the past
00:10two months.
00:11Several locals and the brother of one of the victims, who was killed while out on her daily
00:15run in her neighborhood, have spoken out against the violent acts.
00:19Are we going to sleep tonight, not knowing tomorrow there's another discovery that is
00:25going to be made?
00:25Are we going to sleep on the fact that now there's going to be ladies that are going
00:31to walk alone tonight from ShopRite, from wherever.
00:35Ladies are scared, our sisters are scared.
00:37And are we really sleeping?
00:39Is it eatable, the food?
00:42Is it enjoyable?
00:43Are we okay with this?
00:45It's a bad experience and it's not good for the culture, it's not good for the image of
00:50men.
00:51As I said, we're all parents, we've got kids, we've got daughters, so coming to this
00:58kind of situation where the women are being killed each and every time is very disturbing.
01:03For example, any time you turn off the radio or the TV and see that a woman has been killed,
01:08a total of eight is very, very heartbreaking and it does not give a good picture of men.
01:16Some locals have sought strength in community actions, like running together in honor of the victims.
01:24We are running as a community and as a whole to stand together for Elizabeth and for the other women
01:31who have very tragically lost their lives in the last couple of weeks in our city.
01:35And the reason that we're running together as a community because this is not limited
01:38to any one person and it's a reality that we all face.
01:42When we were gathered here today, I asked some people to raise their hands if they'd ever
01:45felt unsafe on a run or if they'd ever changed their route because they thought that somebody
01:50might be following them and almost everybody's hands went up.
01:53A police investigation into the killings is ongoing but no concrete results have emerged so far.
02:00According to the United Nations Agency for Gender Equality,
02:05femicide raids in South Africa are one of the highest in the world.
