00:00Sergio Perez suffered the most severe injury of his career during the 2011
00:05Monaco Grand Prix on the Monte Carlo street circuit. During qualifying the
00:10Mexican was competing in just his first Formula One season with Sauber. Perez was
00:15on a flying lap when exiting the tunnel and approaching the chicane he slightly
00:20clipped the wall, lost control of the car and then this happened.
00:28The Sauber crashed head-on into the barriers at high speed. The impact was
00:34brutal. After the initial impact the car violently bounced off the barriers and
00:39ended up crashing sideways into the inside wall of the chicane. Perez was
00:44dazed inside the cockpit and had to be assisted by the medical team who removed
00:49him from the car on a stretcher before taking him to the hospital. Later on,
00:53tests confirmed that he had suffered a concussion and a hematoma on his thigh.
00:57Injuries that not only sidelined him from the Monaco Grand Prix but also from the
01:02following race in Canada. Unfortunately, that wasn't the only heavy crash that
01:08weekend because the following day another driver would also crash into the
01:12protocols meant to improve the resistance and barriers in the principally.
01:14That was interesting.
